What does Diskless mean? Is it jut a shell?  We need to buy disks separate?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It is the enclosure and the electronics that manage the RAID system and network communications. You will also need to purchase one or two drives of your choosing. The drives are very, very easy to install, and good directions are provided.

Does this device use physical hard drives?

Accepted Answer

Yes.  The model that uses ethereal hard drives has been delayed.

You'll need a pair of 3.5" SATA drives; the manufacturer has a list of compatible models on their web site; search for "readynas 102 compatible drives"

Question 3

Please forgive my moderate knowledge on the subject, as my only experience with NAS is an external hard drive.  I just want to make sure I understand how this works.  If I put two new hard drives in this unit, is that all that is needed for it to function as for storing files?  Can those two drives be set up to run in RAID 1?  And can two different computers access all of these files via network and/or switch?  Thanks in advance!

You pretty much summed it up. All of the above are correct. Just be sure to use matching drives so as not to add unnecessary complexity. I run one of these units with 2 4TB Seagate drives in RAID1 and have had no issues since 2013. If you want to get more in-depth with this unit there are server functions it can provide and remote access is possible using their software. Hope this helps.

what size hard drives are required 3.5" or 2.5"?

This NAS will take up to two 3.5" drives.  Make sure that the ones you put in are good for a NAS unit like the WD RED drives and not the WD GREEN drives.  While they will work it can cause issues with drives that are generally used as stand alone desktop drives and not made for RAID arrays.

Will this unit support Windows 10 backup?  I have a Dlink unit that I have used for serveral years with XP and Windows 7 backup, but it won't work with Windows 10.

SO i don't actually back up my systems to my Ready NAS but i did do some research.  According to the readyNAS support site the ready NAS 102 should be able to back up windows 10.

i found the instructions on how to do, their to long to include here so follow these instructions withc will take you to a site where you can find them.
1.  google search "readynas 102 backup windows 10"

2. go to the second link down, right under the "back up windows" ad. it should be something like:
"How do I back up my Windows PC to a ReadyNAS ... - netgear"

click on this link and it will give you step by step instructions on how to back up your system

After adding this to my wireless network, will I be able to see and view files, such as video files, from my network connected Smart TV?

Can you hook a drive up to this to back it up?

actually yes, you can
It has an external USB port for exactly that purpose
We haven't tried it but i suppose it works as expected. The unit is a great ISCSI and SMB device

Once set up and running, will it be discover-able on my local network or am I required to use the browser interface? If this is using raid1 can I navigate to it the way I would a USB external drive?

You will need to use the browser interface to set it up. Once it's set up, any volumes you create will by default be visible to computers on the same network. You can enable additional protocols for Apples and NFS for Linux. You can access remotely using ReadyNAS remote, and drag -n- drop files onto explorer windows right from work, very cool.

One interesting note: If you setup multiple users, each user is the only one that can use their directories. Not even the Admin can see them.

If you leave the default name, you can directly access your NAS by navigating to \ReadyNAS102 or whatever name you choose. No browser needed.

The default format is X-Raid, which for this unit is pretty much the same as RAID-1.

It also has instant snapshot backups, DLNA, and tons of free apps to do things like Torrenting, Subversion, Usenet NZBD, etc. It's very impressive for a box that consumes less than 30W of power, and much less when it's idle.

It does have a fan, but you can't hear it. I have mine in the bedroom, the LEDs are very bright but noise is not an issue.

Ordinarily this is a diskless system, unless Newegg adds some drives to make a bundle.  They will probably specify clearly what they are in that case  I would recommend looking at the Red-Label drives that are the ones intended for NAS applications.  Avoid straight "green" drives as they have been known to have some issues where they can lose data by not coming up to a ready state quickly enough (this is worth investigating before you buy so you know more about the issue than I can explain).  I believe a good non-green drive should also work, but I would still tend to use the red-label.  When I bought this it was bundled with red-label drives.
