Can I use this to map a network drive letter (e.g. Z:) on my PCs, or am I forced to use the backup software?

Drives can be mapped as network drives or just be used as a shared folder. The software is not necessary and I did not install it on my systems.

Can you use different sized drives in this nas? I currently have a Drobo and what I like about that unit is that I can put drives with different capacities in it and it will automatically configure to optimize the storage size. As I start filling up the drive, I can unplug one smaller drive and replace it will a larger drive and it will automatically reconfigure and increase storage. For example, I have a 2TB, 3TB, 3TB and 1TB drives in the drobo. Once I was at about 85% capacity, I took out the 1TB drive and replaced it with a new 4TB drive. It automatically reconfigured itself. My experience with standard RAID is that all drives have to be the same. Is this true of this unit?

All NASes out there can use different sized drives. It depends on the type of RAID your using as to how much space you will have available. It has nothing to do with the hardware. What you are describing above is a RAID 5 in any system.
