not bad 7/23/2012 6:48:53 PM

Pros: Keeps your disks from getting all scratched up.

Cons: Like most stuff like this, it's cheaply manufactured. This one isn't as bad as some. Some of the pages ripped out since there is no reinforcement behind the cutout holes.

Overall Review: Better than nothing for sure. I'll probably have to buy another one unless I can find a better brand.

Works if you do this... 2/11/2012 5:34:48 AM

Pros: Allows older drives to be used with newer motherboards that don't have the IDE ribbon cable connection.

Cons: Doesn't tell you that you need to make sure your jumper is set to Master instead of Cable Select or something else. Also doesn't say that the regular power needs to be supplied to the drive, so there will be 3 cords coming off the drive, not just the two that are indicated in the directions. Regular power that you had before the adapter, then the floppy power connector to power the adapter, and the Sata data cord.

Overall Review: 1)No man is free who is not master of himself.

2)No matter how many friends and family around us, we are all alone inside our own brains.

Works as advertised 1/15/2012 12:03:43 PM

Pros: Works as advertised. Took a shiny new 500gb SATA drive and converted to ATA IDE in my 4 year old PCI desktop. New life for cheap! Has functioned perfectly fine for months now.

Cons: SATA connector was a little on the loose side. had to make sure it stayed seated when I put the HDD into the tower cabinet. Checked it 3-4 times, and finally added some tape to be sure it would stay.

Overall Review: I Don't need transfer speed, so I haven't tested that.

had to set Master jumper 11/25/2011 4:44:54 PM

Pros: Works OK, but not until I set the correct jumper on the IDE drive

Cons: Minimal documentation. Had to read other reviews on this site to figure how to make it work.

Has a bright LED inside, which is Red on mine (it seems others have different colors). No big problem though, because it's hidden inside the case.

Overall Review: Would not work with some IDE devices with their drive jumper in the "CS" (cable select) position. It seems those devices require the jumper set to "Master". In particular, my Lite-On optical drive was not even detected by BIOS until I moved that jumper. It seems fine now.

BTW, reason for buying this adapter was to avoid having to change color of my PC's faceplates. I recently upgraded my PC, replacing everything except the cabinet and the optical drives, and needed SATA drives now. It seems Newegg only sells drives with black faceplates now, and I preferred keeping the old beige color. So, mission accomplished... I've got a working system with beige faceplates, which I find easier to use.

Works well for two PATAs in RAID-1 8/4/2011 2:30:21 PM

Pros: First, I bought these items elsewhere for less, but wanted to comment on them after seeing so many low rating reviews. Initially, I was only using one WD 120 GB PATA drive as my backup and storage drive. Since this scenario created a single point of failure, I bought and attached these adapters to two WD drives (120 & 160 GB) in mobile drive racks. Then, I placed the drives in a RAID-1 mirror array. Now, I have more peace of mind if one drive dies since the other one will still have my backup and storage data.

During the install process, I experienced some of the BIOS and OS lock up problems reported here. In both instances, the problem was that I didn't connect separate power adapters to each drive. I didn't make these connections because I wasn't sure if there was a SATA power by-pass withiin the adapter to the drive, which there isn't. Also, I had to remember to remove both Master jumpers from each drive since they were going into a non-Master/Slave SATA environment.

Cons: If you use these adapters w/ mobile racks, be sure the backside PATA connector is flush with the rack body. One of my newer PATA racks that is hot swappable had the PATA connector flush with the rack body. So, attaching the adapter to that rack PATA connector was easy.

The older PATA rack didn't have the PATA connector flush with the body. Instead, it was recessed towards the drive away from the rack body. Since I didn't have a Dremel cutting bit, I opted for hack sawing and hot razor blade/blowtorch cutting a small section of the older rack body. Afterwards, that adapter connected and fit to the drive connector in the old rack without a problem.

Overall Review: Having a modular power supply helped when it came to providing each adapter with power. My power supply provided two PATA power connector cables. On each cable was a floppy drive power cable connector. So, I lucked out on not having to buy anything additional to power the adapters.

FYI, if you get intermittent good and bad response rates and results from your IDE/SATA adapter connected drives, consider using shielded/locking SATA cables. At the moment, the stock mobo SATA cables are working just fine with these IDE/SATA adapters. Although, for my system drives, I had to resort to shielded/locking SATA cables to get my SATA drives to work in my system without any problems.

Didn't work 7/24/2011 7:13:04 PM

Pros: would have been useful ...

Cons: But didn't work. The drive would power up and spin but the BIOS could not see the drive.

Overall Review: NewEgg RMA was easy and quick.

Pros: It had a fancy blue light

Cons: never worked locked up two different motherboards tried to different HD's and a DVD RW drive
locked up windows XP and windows 7 ult 64 bit

Overall Review: I should have spent three more dollars and purchased a new DVD /rw drive instead of trying to save a couple of dollars.
if you read these reviews and see multiple lockups its all true
Save yourself the time and just get a new drive
