Question 1

Hi i'm looking into buying a monitor and the desk where my computer is, has a hutch. i have about a little less than 18 inches of clearance from the base of the dest to the lower end of the hutch. Could you tell me if this monitor will fit? Even if it's snug, it will work for me.

Yes you'll be able to fit it in and have a couple inches to spare. Might be close. The total height is just under 16" - keep in mind you cannot disconnect the base, as all the outlets are on it.

Question 2

Does audio go through hdmi and sound come out of the built in speakers?

Yes. I have a laptop connected via HDMI and audio comes out the built-in speakers and NOT my laptop speakers. I cannot 100% confirm the same behavior with older devices such as set-top boxes, but it does work with newer HDMI devices like laptops and media boxes.

Question 3

Does this monitor have a real glass cover (like the Acer H236HLbid) or is it plastic?

The Acer H236HLbid doesn't have a glass screen, it's just glossy instead of matte like a normal computer monitor.  The person who commented that it was made of glass must not know what glass is.  The Acer S236HLtmjj's display is exactly like the Acer H236HLbid's, made of glossy plastic.  
I don't think I can recall any computer monitors with glass screens except maybe Apple's, but those are wayyy overpriced.

Is there an audio output (3.5mm jack) for this monitor?

There is not. There is an audio input tied to the VGA port so can still have speaker audio without HDMI, but you cannot take audio out of the monitor.

what kind of audio cable works with this monitor? 3.5mm or rca? that's if you don't have hdmi

It is definitely the 3.5 mm style (not the RCA style).  And it looks like the larger 3.5mm however I did not measure it.

Is this or is this not a (passive) 3D ready monitor?

This is NOT a 3D capable monitor. I believe the only people making passive 3D monitor are LG (model D2342P). Samsung do make several 3D capable monitors but I believe these are all active designs and require battery-powered glasses.

Question 7

Have you tried playing fast-paced games on this monitor?  Did you get much tearing or ghosting in high-contrast scenes?

The Specifications page says that the moniter is 3d ready,  has anyone tried this and what kind of 3d glasses do you need for it?

you need an "Nvidia 3D vision" kit,  it will not work with HDTV 3D glasses, as the monitor does not include a transmitter for active glasses.

Can this monitor be turned vertically?

No, it can't.  Also, saw this monitor up close and personal and the offset stand really bothered me.  Too much weight on the left and the monitor was not sitting straight and could not adjust the Horizontal position.

Question 10

It mentions 3D ready. What system are they referring to? Nvidia 3D?

if so then the refresh rate has to be 120Hz (for Nvidia). I see that it is only 60 or 70...
