Question 1

I am thinking about purchasing the BENQ W1070. How are the built-in speakers on it? Does anyone have any recommendations on what speakers work well with the BENQ W1070.

The built-in speakers are not "serious." They are tiny, like portable radio speakers, probably only to help in setting up the projector, not for serious use.

I would assume that anyone buying this projector would be sending the VIDEO signal to the BenQ, but the audio signal through a stereo (or higher) audio system.

The obvious and natural way to do this is to us a modern 5.1 or 7.2 digital receiver, with (for example) a Blu-Ray player's HDMI cable going INTO one of the receiver's inputs, the sound going out from the receiver into "real" speakers, and the video going from the receiver's HDMI "OUT" jack, out to the projector.

Used this way, you get stunning video (via the Benq) and equally stunning audio (via a good "Digital Receiver" and via BIG "hi-fi" speakers.  It would be "nuts" to watch movies with great sound and TEENSY audio on the "set-up speakers" that are in this great projector.

Question 2

Is this truly smart capability like new smaer tv's?t

Accepted Answer

No smart features built in to the projector, some other models include them but this is a pretty straightforward device. If you have $$$ to spend on a projector, surely you can afford a PC, Roku or FireTV stick to plug into it. You'll be much better off for it, believe me.

Question 3

Can I connect a wireless speaker (via bluetooth) to this projector?

I just checked my unit and DO NOT see either a Bluetooth logo or option on the back panel or elsewhere on the unit for Bluetooth connectivity.  I simply use a long single HDMI cable which I ran through my ceiling and plugged into my Pioneer audio/video receiver.

What is DPL? Is that an advancement on DLP?

No,  DPL is dolby pro logic. It has to deal with the sound.  DPL decodes sounds files so you can do things such as go from stereo to 5.1 surround sound. Just to let you know this projector is awesome! Minus the sound isn't top notch but I put it surround sound so if doesn't matter now.

How much are the glasses? Where do you get them? Are tyhey pasive or active? Is the 3d image as good as the 2d image?

The glasses are Active Shutters. In my opinion, AS works much better than polarized one. I'm kind of biased on this because I didn't have a good experience with polarized glasses. Anyways, I found really cheap and measurable glasses on Amazon. I bought two pairs of AS glasses for $58. I'd say 3D effect is amazing. For 2D, you don't need glasses for that obviously and I think it's just as amazing on this projector.

Question 6

The native aspect ratio of the W1070 is 16:9. But, what if I'm watching an old DVD of a television show, and the picture aspect ratio is 4:3? If the projector is at the same distance from the screen, will the image expand vertically, or shrink horizontally?

It should fit within the screen, top-to-bottom, with bands (likely grey or black) on each side, just as if watching a converted SD analog broadcast. All wide-screen projectors handle this the same way. You can also try options on the aspect ratio menu (on the remote) to fill the full screen - but then making everything "fat."  This is not a unique situation, and projector design handles 4:3 automatically.

Question 7

will this work in a 9 foot room  ?

The short answer is yes. But there are several variables to consider when installing a projector for proper home theater performance. There will always be a trade off between screen size and throw distance. You can use the benq throw distance calculator to figure out exactly what you need.

Does this have a capability to be installed upside down on a ceiling bracket.   Does it have an adapter bracket?

Yes, it is easily mounted on the ceiling with the purchase of a separate ceiling mount.  In the video settings select the ceiling mounted position to project the image correctly on the screen since you mount the projector upside down.

Anyone know what the model number for the bulb replacement is?  I heard a loud pop and now have no picture in my w1070.

Question 10

I don't understand how to determine if this will work with my setup.  I have a 7' wide screen and this will be ceiling mounted 11' horizontally from the screen.  How can I use the information on the lens to determine if this will work?

Adam ~ the quite good manual that comes with this projector (pages 15-19) have terrific information, guidance and tables to help a 'normal person' figure out if this BenQ, your room width (distance from lens to screen) and screen size will work.

I got the manual as a free downloadable PDF from BenQ's website. It's also available on a number of other sites (I just Googled "BenQ 1070W manual").  If you use other sites than Benq's, make sure you have a GOOD virus/'bug' protection on your computer, because some such sites are bogus 'trouble-installers.'

This projector is STUNNING, by the way: brightness, true hi-def clarity and superb (easy to use) controls. Good luck!
