Question 1

How are the on-board speakers? I ask because desk space is a bit of a premium right now and my PC doubles as my media center so I've been using a 32" TV for my main monitor but it's only on HDMI. Could I reasonably replace that with this and have similar sound quality?

The speakers are pretty good. I sit very close to my monitor and use it to edit in premiere. So, I'm not sure how it would work say if you were sitting a ways from it. It is pretty loud though in my opinion. Keep in mind there is also a volume adjustment on the monitor itself using the toggles on the bottom. I would install the LG software for this monitor. You can get to all of the settings on your monitor through an app instead of having to fumble with the little joystick on the bottom (which is not hard to use btw). I have mine hooked up via display port. I'm sure HDMI is just as good.

Question 2

I am looking for a monitor that is 'double wide' but not 'double-tall'. Is this it? (IOW, I want the equivalent of two monitors side by side, but as a solid unit.)

It is not double-tall.  But it is also not quite as wide as 2 monitors side-by-side.  I recently went from 2 side-by-side monitors on a pole after many years, and I do really like this one.  I thought the curve would bother me but after the first few days I don't even notice it anymore.  Love no glare on the this screen also. Just FYI

The monitor will work, just the active refresh sync will not work (you nee a gsync monitor for that)
