Height with stand says 18.1". Is that at highest setting? Can I lower at all from that? Desk shelf gives me about 17.8"

I have two sitting here on my desk in front of me and, from the surface of my desk, they stand +/- 18.5 inches tall. There is no height adjustment on the stands so they cannot be lowered. If you have less space than this, your monitor will not fit. Remember too that you need even more height if you want to put a webcam on top of the monitor. I have a small Logitech HD cam on one and it adds another 1.5 inches to the height.

is this screen wall mountable?

Depends. If you want to make a special shelf for it, then yes.

Otherwise no. The base is not removable on this unit, so there is no VESA standard mounting pattern on the back. That means there it nowhere to mount the myriad of special mounting arms, etc, available.

No ... there are no mounting holes on the back.  Moreover, connections are in the stand, which would complicate a wall mount.

is the stand removable? how thick is the monitor itself?

There is a large flat "foot" on the monitor that is detachable. But the main base is not because the monitor controls are in the base.

It would be possible to remote the large flat "foot" on the monitor to fab up some type of custom bracket/mounting solution, but there is NO option to use a VESA style mount.

The monitor is just under 7/8" thick at it's thickest point which is the very bottom where the viewsonic emblem is.

where are they speakers?

The two 1.5 Watt stereo speakers are located under the bezel.  Being so small, they do an adequate job when you utilize the included SRS Premium software to adjust the sound quality to your taste.  Make no mistake though.  These are not high quality speakers by any means.  I utilize a home stereo and high quality bookshelf speakers to enhance my game-play or movie-watching experience.  One should never expect much from built-in monitor speakers.  They are simply a ubiquitous feature that the manufacturer includes to make their features list "sound" more appealing.  Pun intended :)

Overall, I am very satisfied with the overall quality of the Viewsonic VX2770Smh-LED monitor.  It provides a beautiful and vivid picture.  It is a little difficult at first to get used to the placement of the adjustment controls which are located on the base behind the screen.  Difficult to get to unless you tilt the screen back, but once the monitor is adjusted to your brightness and contrast liking, you will most likely never have to deal with them again.  On a scale on one to ten, I give this monitor a 10 for image and clarity.  I give it a 7 for overall design.  A great investment if you are looking for a new monitor, or if you are replacing a 15 year old Viewsonic CRT as I was.  I highly recommend this monitor.

Wondering how LED IPS compares to CCFL IPS in the real world?  I have a ViewSonic 24-inch CCFL IPS that I have been using for photo editing for a few years now and I love it.  I'm thinking of going to a LED IPS and this one looks interesting, but wonder if it will be a step up or down, image quality wise?

This is the first and only led or ips monitor I have.  The ips is all I will acquire in the future.  As to whether the led improves image quality I can't say.  My guess is it didn't hurt it any. Everything else equal, the increase or decrease in size may affect image quality. I bought the 27" because of the size and this particular monitor because of the price.
