Does the stand detach? (Can it be removed?)

Accepted Answer

It doesn't ship with the stand attached, so yes.  I don't think it is really designed to be mounted another way though.  The stand is a bit wobbly but I haven't had any problems with it otherwise.

Question 2

Does it have problems waking up from sleep?

I have 2 of them and 1 VN247 monitor which is basically the same but not IPS display.

None of them have ever had issues not waking up, but they can take a long time to show an image if they were in standby or in between video signals (Like rebooting).  Sometimes if I cold boot the pc it doesn't come on until Windows is at the loading screen, but I've never considered that a problem or anything.  If I want to get into the bios I just start hitting delete when it reboots.  Not sure what the "never waking up" thing is that people talk about. Mine have all worked flawlessly in over 10 different video cards and ports.  Maybe it's an AMD thing when outputting from a certain port? (I have all nvidia)

Question 3

Does this monitor have a glossy or matte finish?

Not glossy at all.  Being an IPS panel it is very clear and has great color at all angles.  Most monitors have a very narrow viewing angle with accurate color.  Best viewing monitor I have had!

Question 4

How is this monitor when it comes to gaming? any ghosting? All together how is it?

I don't do a lot of gaming, but my son tried it out and it met his approval. We saw no ghosting, but did not use it extensively for gaming. I wanted it because of the IPS feature which provides the best color rendition for photo editing. I calibrated it with Xrite ColorMunki and get excellent results on my editing, much better than my calibrated laptop screen or previous lcd monitor. I also like the fact that there is little to no image quality drop off on off axis viewing. You don't have to be perfectly in front of the screen for accurate rendition of color and contrast. I am extremely pleased with the monitor and recommend it.

Question 5

Can this monitor swirl to portrait position (vertical)?

If you get independent VESA stand/arms (recommended) they will. You don't want those bulky mechanical parts on the monitor itself; better on the stand/arm. These monitors are very sleek and slim (including the bezel and the thickness).

Question 6

Does this monitor, in standby mode, automatically recognize devices that are on and turns on, then turns automatic goes into when there are no connected devices on? I have a similar model, the ASUS VN247H-P, and it does that. Isn't it a feature found in all computer monitors?

I didn't totally follow your wording there, but this device does go into sleep mode if nothing is sending information into it, and wakes itself up when a connected device is sending it information. I use it with a docking station and I never have to switch the screen off after using it.

Question 7

I'm currently using a Dell S2340L IPS panel. The colors and quality is excellent and text is crisp but has a glossy finish that is causing a problem with room lighting. Can anyone comment on the color & text quality of this panel (including glare) and the Dell S2340L?

I purchased two of these monitors in Sept-2013.  I use their HDMI video ports.  I stepped up from a HP Brand 19" model L1906 -- it was like putting on glasses for the first time!

My monitors face windows (my back is to the windows), and are exposed to outside light a full 180 degrees.  I get zero (0) glare from the windows, and the display remains very bright in spite of the direct exposure to outside light.

I was dubious when I purchased these monitors because of their price point, but the risk was worth it since they were so "cheap."  I have made these monitors my workplace spec, and will add two-each of these to each new PC we add to upgrade our XP boxes to Windows-7 boxes in Q1-2014.

Question 8

I plan on using this as an external display for my laptop.  Can I plug my speakers directly into the monitor so all I have to do is plug the HDMI into my laptop?  Thanks.

Yes. You can plug the speakers directly into the monitor. The monitor has a 3.5mm audio out jack. All you need to do is plug the hdmi into your laptop and on your laptop, you can choose where you want the audio to come from. i.e. from your laptop or your hdmi connected device (monitor in this case)

Does it come with HDMI to DVI cable? What year model is this monitor?

VN248H-P does not come with a DVI-HDMI cable.
Bought mine in September.  It is dated June 2013.

Other thoughts:
Lots of good sales on ASUS monitors lately.  Consider VS24AH-P if a higer resolution would interest you. Or VN279Q if a bigger screen.
