Is there any advantage to the USB-C version over the USB version?

Yea, go with USB-C , when your machine boots you don't need drivers you could see the Bios Boot messages and go into it if needed: the  USB, you need drivers to be installed to make it work. Find for windows 10 biut only after widows has loaded. Plus it doesn't work with my Dual boot sever 2012 R2. Go with the USB-C instead. Good luck!

Will this monitor work on a desktop with a mobo supporting usb type c port and integrated graphics or an amd apu?

This monitor will support it as long as the computer sending the signal supports displayport over usb-c. I recently purchased the Intel skull canyon nuc and had to enable displayport through thunderbolt, so if it doesn't work right off the bat, make sure to enable it in the bios. Once enabled, you make need to plug and unplug once to recognize, but it definitely works.

Question 3

Anyone know how to make this work with a standard USB 3.0 port?  Tried a USB to USB-C adapter cable, (on USB 3.0 port) with no success, even after installing drivers per ASUS phone support.  They said it does not work with USB 3.0 (even though the product description says it does!).  Sent it back.

With this particular model you can't, it uses DPalt, exclusive to USB 3.1 over Type-C.  On the same product page they have a different version that is USB 3.0.
