This monitor has a 3D function

This will be a short and long answer at the same time. I do not quite understand the meaning of 3D function. Regarding monitors a better question is: is it 3D ready or compatible? The short answer for the ROG Strix XG 279Q is NO. I contacted ASUS and the answer is no 27 inch gaming monitor is 3D ready. The ASUS 3D ready ( 3D Vision)monitors are: MG 248Q, VG 248QE, and VG 278H, as examples. In the specifications under I/O inputs it will indicate if it is 3D Vision ready or not.  ACER Predator XB0 series are 3D ready. 
NVIDIA G-Sync, ULMB, and 3D Vision are mutually exclusive, and the 3D Vision works only at 100Hz or 120 Hz frequency, per some blog info.
I contacted NVIDIA and I could not get a satisfactory answer. From its website I got some information of interest.
3D Vision with release of the 430 driver, the NVIDIA drivers no longer supports the following 3D Vision technologies and features:
NVIDIA 3D Stereoscopic driver, including the 3D Vision driver and USB (emiter) driver.
NVAPI- based stereo APIs for direct 3D applications.

Is this monitor 8-bit or 10-bit?

Per the specifications, the monitor can display 16.7 M colors. A 8-bit depth,  bit color, or bit per channel, it means 2 to the 8 or 256 shades per each of the primary colors: red(R), blue(B), and green(G). This mean 256 x 256 x 256 = 16,777,216 colors. Each pixel has three sub pixels: red, blue. and green. It also means as zeros and ones 00000000 to 11111111(binary data) . The eye can only recognize 10 M colors.
For a 10-bit monitor would be 2 to the 10 = 1024 shades for each red, blue, and green and equal to 1.07 B colors or exactly 1,073,741,824 different colors. As the example for 8-bit above is 0000000000 to 1111111111 as binary data. 8-bits is one byte. Now I read some NVIDIA  forum chat which were saying that if you want a 4 k computer monitor they suggest a 10-bit monitor, and they add it makes a difference. If you cannot differentiate more than 10 M colors I doubt that assertion. I would say that the image is much sharper. The 8-bit monitor is also known as true color and 10-bit as deep color. 
Now, you have to consider which video card you own. At NVIDIA's website I found that  10-bit is a requirement for UHD/HDR monitors. 10-bpc (bits per channel) in consumer cards support only Direct X applications. Pro-software rely mostly on OpenGL/CL. Some programs are not supported, like Photo Shop. Then, in the case you want a 10-bpc (30-bit) monitor you need a professional card like the NVIDIA Quadro line. RGB is always 8-bit. Remember the monitor you are asking about is HDR ready. It has two HDR modes:
1-ASUS gaming HDR set by ASUS 
2-ASUS Cinema HDR which complies with VESA display HDR.

Question 3

what is the actual refresh rate?? It claims to have 170Hz overclocked but I don't want to overclock more things than I have to.

The default refresh rate that windows detects is 144hz. From the monitor's menu you can overclock is to 155, 160, 165 and 170. After you set the monitor overclock you can change it to whatever overclock you set in windows.

Question 4

Im considering this monitor for purchase. However, can someone highlight to me what's different between this monitor and the similar ASUS PG279Q? I cannot find anything that highlights specific differences, and I can seem to find an explanation as to why the PG279Q is more expensive and generally has higher ratings or better reviews?

This monitors brightness is higher and has a better response time. The pg279q has a 4ms response time and this is 1ms which makes it better for FPS games. This monitor is also rated for HDR and the other one's brightness is too low at 350cd/m²

Question 5

Please tell me which cable is more efficient - is it better (better) to use DisplayPort or HDMI? What is the cable in the package contents?

at this monitor's native resolution of 2560x1440 HDMI will only go as high as 144Hz, DisplayPort will get you to the max refresh rate of 170Hz. Both HDMI and DisplayPort cables were included with the monitor when I got mine.
