How long is the pole? I am intending to mount a monitor vertically and above another monitor. It doesn't appear long enough to accommodate that position.

The top of the pole is about 9.5" from the desk surface, the cylinder on the arm takes about 2" of pole. With the arm all the way down on the pole and the arm in the up position the center of the monitor mount is 14" from the desk surface. I estimate you could raise that up by 7.5" to get the center of the monitor mount up to 21.5". I think they sell additional arms and or different models that have hold more monitors. This mount is heavy duty and can hold a heavy monitor, the spring in mine is so strong my older, kind of heavy 21" monitor will not hold it down when I lower the arm, even though I have adjusted the spring to the lightest setting.

Would this arm work on a different pole than what comes with it? Say a 25mm (1") tube?

The mounting tube on mine measures 1.41" in diameter. You would probably need a bushing to take up the space on a 1" tube.
