Question 1

All I have coming into my house is the internet cable and no modem. Will this modem/router work or will I still need a modem from my telephone company?

Anna: I just want to verify that when you say DSL cable you mean the telephone line which carries the DSL traffic in addition to voice calls, as opposed to TV cable that combines TV and Internet signals. If you're speaking of the phone line, the Zoom modem should work fine, through if you're speaking of TV cable you'd need to have a modem that is specifically made to work with the  coaxial cable used for TV.  As for the Zoom, I bought this for someone else and last I heard they haven't set it up yet. As I remember, this is supposed to have the ability to automatically detect the DSL signal and set itself up. That's in a perfect world. In the real world, it may or may not do so. Don't fret, in that case you can usually get the information you need to set it up from your DSL provider (if you don't feel confident setting it up, if you have a friend or family member that's a computer guru, they can probably help you. If not, the DSL provider may be able to end someone out to set it up for you, though that usually comes at a price.  Usually buying the modem from the DSL provider is a lot more expensive proposition and sometimes they use really cheap modems that may not last or in which DSL reception is not the best. Being able to select a good modem on your own is usually preferable. As for Zoom, I've used them in the past and have always been pleased with their performance and longevity.

will this work with COMCAST and COX ?

People keep asking the same question....THIS modem is an ADSL (or Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) modem; it works with a DIGITAL signal that is overlayed with the ANALOG voice signals on your home telephone line...NOT a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) line like Vonage, but a real live telephone line from Ma Bell.  In black and white, on paper, the CABLE modems that will work with COMCAST, VERIZON, COX, TIMEWARNER, DELPHIA, etc., are all much faster than this modem...BUT...in the REAL world...that cable bandwidth is shared in a neighborhood; so although on paper a cable modem appears to be 10X faster than a ADSL modem, as more people sign on, the bandwidth PER SUBSCRIBER keeps dropping until the ADSL modem is actually 5-7.5 X faster than the cable modems...REMEMBER:  ADSL = What you see is what you get...the data rate and bandwidth do not vary because the line is dedicated to you (the Subscriber); CABLE = varying data rates and bandwidth, depending on time of day and number of your neighbors that are on the same trunk...if you are a cable subscriber, and are the only one for miles in either direction along a major roadway, you would have a dedicated trunk...not that it would remain forever yours; the cable company would dedicate it to you and to the "future" subscribers sure to move in along that major road in the near future...but until they do, you would have some kick-ass internet access!           So - in long-winded summary: NO this WILL NOT work with your cable provider.

im getting internet with 50 mbps will this modem work for that?

This is a DSL modem which has a downstream maximum in its best configuration of 27mbps --

Maximum downstream rate of 8 Mbps (ADSL), or 27 Mbps (ADSL 2+) - Maximum upstream rate of 1024 Kbps (ADSL), or 1200 Kbps (ADSL 2+) or 2600 Kbps (Annex M) Interoperable with all major DSLAM manufacturers. Are you connecting to your internet supplier using a cable  company (comcast/RCN/)? If so you need a cable modem not a DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modem which is usually supplied by the local telephone company. My connection is 6 Mbps from AT&T.

Is this a cable modem compatible with COMCAST networks?  JM

This is NOT a cable modem AT ALL!  It is an ADSL modem, which is the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) signal that is piggybacked onto your digital landline when you subscribe to it through your phone company...it requires that you use a special low pass filter at each telephone so you do not here the "hiss" of the high speed data being sent and received over the phone line at the same time as the analog voice signals.

Other than that, it is FAST, easily configurable, and has a lot further "reach" than the older Zoom wireless ADSL modem/router it replaced...with no drop-outs!  Hope this helps!

Is this compatible with ATT DSL?

The provider shouldn't make a difference, as long as you get a DSL router your good.  If still in doubt you can call att and they should have a compatibility list.

Is there an on/off switch for the wi-fi?? can you run another router off this modem router??

Yes, you can disable the wireless circuit if you need to and you can also hide your SSID from being broadcast as well. This device is *really* cool. It has *many* features available from the rom menus. This device will also assign another IP to any other router that you plug into the back 4 wired ports as well. I'm using it on CenturyLink DSL and it works flawlessly. A lot of ISP's use Zoom products on their end too so their tech support people know all about them. Hope this helps. -eL-

Is it possible to turn off the wireless part of this modem when you don't want wireless and just use the ethernet cable for going online? And then turn the wireless back on when you want it?
