Motorola SBG6580 sure does fullfill my wants. it saves me
five dollars a month and will pay for itself. When you don"t

Does this modem have an on/off button or does it stay on continuously until you pull the power cord??

HELLO,
YES there is no power on/off switch. Once plugged in the unit.remains on until unplugged. To share I went through many routers and found this one to be the very best for our needs, running many devices in our home.  Once.plugged.In you must call your cable provider to activate, once thats complete run a speed test, and you'll notice greater speed and no lag.

This modem is not able to broadcast both 2.4ghz and 5ghz at the same time, correct? It can only broadcast one band or the other?

That is correct, it is a single band device and you can choose 2.4ghz or 5ghz on the setup page

Brand new, never plugged in? - so it is suitable with COMCAST?
Without checking a "basket", is this shipping free?  return free if Comcast problem? or better to go local at Best?   
As is, this is 15th day without Main TV because of Comcast run arounds over MANY hours! An Exec even lives NEXT DOOR!

I use this modem with Comcast.  There is a list of approved modems on one of Comcast's Support pages.

The list says it is not compatible with IPv6, but this is just because Comcast hasn't bothered to update their software yet, the hardware is capable.

If comcast is your cable internet provider.. then yes.. but I always say call the company and see if the modem is on there approved list.. they should have one or some specs on what is required in a modem for there company

Is this really a cable modem AND a router?

Yes, cable modem + wifi + ethernet.  But the wifi is very broken in certain firmware versions, and you can't upgrade or downgrade the firmware yourself because its firmware for the whole device controlled by your cable company.  I still use mine as a cable modem, and my Roku is hooked to it by ethernet, but for wifi I went back to my trusty old Linksys.  So much for saving space on the shelf.

If you are able to hookup your cable supplied modem to it, it might.  I personally have a cable phone and tv modem and hooked it to this one.  I did this for extra sped and online security.  I can't answer with any definitive yes or no. Try calling or chatting with product support of the manufacturers of this item to be sure for yourself

I am a time warner customer I know that this modem is compatible with my internet provider I cannot answer the question if it is compatible with Comcast network it would be better if you contact them in regards to the cable modem compatible with their network. Sorry I could not be of more help.
I am sure it will work if you know anything about setting up you wireless network and modem for surfing.

Does this modem work with cox?

If it is on the list, it will work.  But it may need a firmware update to be stable.  You can't do it yourself.   You have to call your ISP, provide a Mac address, and have have them update it over the network (no need to take it in).
