Just making sure that this item is in fact a Multitech MT9234ZBA-USB-CDC-XR for the model number?

The item description does not show the model number.

Hi Josh,

This is the MT9234ZBA-USB-CDC-XR.  We had some problems finding a working driver for the windows XP machine we set it up on, but we did eventually get it working.  I believe i had to unplug it and plug it back in before and after installation of the drivers to get it to work finally.  It's been a long time though.

It say's USB modem but the specifications clearly state serial ... which is it?

It's USB.

We were concerned at first when we purchased it, because we also saw that the specifications said serial, but it is USB and works well.

Question 3

What driver are you using for 2008 R2? The driver from their website does not work. No CD was included with the modem.

I don't know if this helps, but the Q&A page on the MultiTech website discusses an occassional fax send failure issue with Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 due to a corrupt Windows .dll file, and has references to Microsoft tech support on how to replace the file.  I am not sure if this is a problem for Win Server 2008 R2, maybe not.

I have installed the driver from the MultiTech website
on both a Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 system. The driver installs correctly, and the modem query is successful. I have yet to try sending a fax with Microsoft Fax and Scan, however.

This has the USB port that powers the modem correct?

Correct, it has a USB port that provides all the power the modem needs as well as data transfer. This is different from the other MultiModem models which use an RS232 interface.
