Can this be used for purposes other than flight sims? Are you able to program the switches for whatever?

Yes, if you install the programming software, you can set the buttons on the unit to just about any keyboard command, including multiple strokes. Not sure what you may or may not be able to do with the axis thou. Software for unit can be found at logitech web site. Latest ver for w10 is Flight_Throttle_Quadrant_x64_8_0_150_0
