Does it have a mute option? I cant really tell from the pictures.

Yes.  That volume up/down button you see on the cord has a center button which is the mute.  I found it by accident :)
Great headset.  Believe the reviews that say it's LOUD.  I run it at lowest possible volume and have game sounds turned down to make it manageable.  But it's comfortable and has great sound.

Question 2

Will this work even though my onboard sound card isnt 7.1? I mean its a 7.1 headset so im asking if this will work as a 7.1 headset even though ny sound source isnt 7.1?

Short answer - Yes.

Long answer - Yes, the 7.1 sound is software emulated and it utilizes a USB connection.  That means that channel processing will be handled by your CPU and the software provided with the headset.  Because of this, make sure you download the appropriate driver/software from the corsair website as it is not provided in the box and Windows update will give it the generic driver without the software.

Be sure to read all the reviews here on NewEgg!  Pay special attention to the ones discussing driver installation for your operating system.  It takes a little tweaking with the software to get the sound how you like it but it is worth the effort.  This headset sounds great!  I use it for FPS games, music, and general listening.  The FPS games that I play are typically stealthy, MMO types that require you to be able to hear your surroundings clearly.  I can attribute many of my successful wins to this headsets clarity and directional capability.  I completely agree with the other reviews that state - if you are willing to take the time to configure/install them appropriately you will not be let down.

Does the headset have a braided cable, or a standard cable? If it's a standard cable, is the cable durable enough for continuous use?

This 1500 V2 Headset has a very tough tight thread braided 10FT cable that attaches to the headset on it's left hand side near the mic boom so if your computer is on your right it will cross your lap. The cable is long though and doesn't bother me at all; i've sat on my couch chatting on Teamspeak with my gaming clan during game breaks. I've gamed just fine with these many times up to around 8 hours straight... it's about my limit, lol. It's very tough as well as i've rolled over the cable with my computer chair's  wheels many times, even while the cable was coiled under the wheel, and there is no sign of any wear and tear. I've owned my pair since Dec 2013 and am very happy with them to this very day.

can i apply the usb to 2.0/3.0? and should that usb port be in a sound card or just a normal usb port?

This headset has a built in soundcard so you should plug it in to a normal USB port.

I just bought a pair of Vengeance 1500 v2 and installed the consair headset control panel. However, after I open the control panel, nothing happens. And there is an icon in the right bottom corner of my screen. Nothing happens after I double click it. If i right click it, it will show a menu, with a grey "restore" and "information" and a black "Exit".
In the device manager, there is a corsair vengeance 1500 under the "Other Device". The device detail says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"
I am sure that the headset is plugged in during this process. My OS is Windows 7 Enterprise.
Does anyone know how to solve it?

My initial thought would be to uninstall the corsair software and then reinstall it using the "run as administrator" option to run the setup program. Do a computer restart after the uninstall and before the fresh install. Do not have the headset plugged in until after the fresh install is complete or directed to plug it in by the software. It sounds like the software was installed but the drivers themselves did not get registered with windows. I would try that first.

If that doesn't work you can check in Device Manager and see if there is an unidentified piece of hardware that could be your headset (will have a little yellow triangle with an ! in it and some generic sounding name). If you see one that might be your headset you can right click it, go to properties, and try to manually install the drivers by pointing the dialog box that comes up at your installation files.

Has anyone used this headset with a Playstation 3, or know if it can? Or if Generic USB Audio drivers work which is what I believe allows my current, old Plantronics with both PC and PS3.

Surround sound headsets use specific drivers, and gaming systems aren't programmed with the specific USB drivers for them. If you could find a Bluetooth adapter to pair with the PS3, you might have something.

Does this headset have surround sound? It seems priced for it but I can't find it saying that anywhere.

Is the headset and driver compatible with Windows 8.1?

I have the wireless version and Windows 8.1, works fine.  The wired ones I bought for my kids are on Vista and Windows 7, but I would be very surprised if they were any different, Corsair drivers seem to be very good.

Does this support USB 3.0?

The USB for this device is 2.0 however, any 2.0 usb can work inside a 3.0 port. Any 3.0 USB can also work inside a 2.0 port.

Both of the above will give you 2.0 quality and speed.

Will this headset work with my macbook pro?

I've seen forum posts where people indicated that it worked with their Mac, but on the corsair website there is no official OSX driver or software available. So there's no guarantee it will work on your macbook, and if it does no guarantee that it will work right.
