Question 1

i can play DVDs and Burn DVDs but i cant get it to play a blu-ray movie? do i need buy soft wear for it?
sorry this is my 1st PC

There several ways to playback your movie, I'll try my best to help.

1) Make sure your video card is connected to your monitor using an HDMI cable. Then you'll need a program for bluray playback, so far I've had the least problems with "ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre", but you can also try "Cyberlink Power DVD", to see if if suit your needs better.

2) This method doesn't require an HDMI cable. Using either "DVDFab Passkey" or "SlySoft AnyDVD HD" you can remove any limitations, region coding, need for an HDMI cable, etc & use either a FREE program like "MPC-BE" or "VideoLan - VLC" for movie only playback, or can use one of the commercial programs I listed above for full bluray playback.

can this be used on its own or do I need a computer ?

This is not a self-contained unit so the simple answer is: no you cannot use it on its own; you need a computer. (You could use the unit without a computer but not without some DIY tinkering such as adding a power supply, case, and controller unit.)

Question 3

I have an HD pavilion P-7-1110 PC it has windows 7, will this blue ray burner work in my computer?  Will it play blue ray and reg DVDs and will it burn reg. DVDs?

There should be no reason this will not work on windows 7. I have not burned a blue ray disk yet, but it will surely read them ok and it has no problem reading and writing dvd's. I use dvd-r and have not tried dvd+r but it says in the literature for the drive those will work.
I am also sure that any of the dvd burners should be able to burn cd's as well in case you were wondering.
As long as your computer motherboard bios sees the drive and windows 7 has a driver for it, then all should be fine.
Are you experiencing some kind of issue with getting dvd burners to be seen by win 7?
Since win xp on I have had no real issues with getting dvd burners to work. I usually use Nero and most of the time now I use a portable version of nero for my copying and burning.

Question 4

Can this burner be placed in an external housing (USB3 or Thunderbolt) for use with a 27" i7 quad core iMac with 32gGB of ram?

I suspect so. Features may be limited by your enclosure choice, but the drive itself is quite robust. Mine is in an old but good USB2 + Firewire 800 + eSata enclosure. I normally use it with Roxio Toast via Firewire 800. I mainly use it with an early 2009 17" Macbook Pro capable of booting 10.5 - 10.10, and it seems to play nice with any OS I throw at it. if you can manage to make a Mac bootable DVD, it actually works, but stupid slow. Apparently there is a reason Mac OS X no longer ships on optical media. Hope this helps.
