Is it "self-powered" via the USB cable or does it require external power via another source such as a USB hub or external power cord?

Yes it is self-powered and works great. No power cord needed.

do i need to download software for this drive?

No, you do not. I have used this with Windows 7, 8, and 10 and CentOS 6 and 7 and Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, and 17.10 and never had to install a driver for any of those operating systems. I've also used it with dozens of PCs and laptops to boot from CDs/DVDs and have never found a BIOS that didn't recognize it as a bootable device.

I have an ASUS laptop - 2.16 Ghz Intel processor, 4 Ghz of RAM, running WIN 10 OS - is this drive compatible?

If your laptop has an available USB 2.0 port it should be compatible. Win 10 should install the CD/DVD drive without the need for a driver.

Does this work with Windows 11 on a laptop?

Yes, so long as you have a USB port to plug it into, it should be simple to plug-in and use.

windows 10 compatable?

Absolutely! Mine's connected to one at all times and works perfectly.

Does this drive work with Mac OS 10.10.xx and 10.11.xx?

I have 10.11.1 there is no problem and never has been. The plastic seems a bit thin but it runs and plays like a charm. No Probs.

does this play blue ray?

No, this unit does not play/burn bluray, only DVD or CD.

Is this compatible with the new Mac operating system-- iOS Sierra?

I don't know I use Windows PC. I can say on my Windows PC this is a nice little DVD drive, fast and quite!

What does it mean by TV connectivity? Does it play DVD movies by directly connecting to TV?

It should IF TV has USB port. Works fine on my PC that also has TV support.

Is This Xp Compatible ?

Yeso, I've used it on win xp. I downloaded the drivers, unsure if they came with it in the box
