Is this drive compatible to windows 8?

Yes.  It works as most  external USB device. Plug and Play.
You can intermediately start recording and burning disc from the basic windows file explorer. However some functionality as lighscribing you will need to run from the applications that came on the software discs

It says it comes with lightcribe support but does it come with a lightscribe program too?

Yes. Mine came with a special version of Nero 9 Essentials that includes LightScribe labeling software. You might read somewhere that the LightScribe module is included only in the full version of Nero 9, but that is not true. The version of Nero 9 Essentials bundled with LightScribe-capable burners like this one have the labeling software.

I have not tried this software myself, so I cannot comment on its efficacy.

Is this compatible with the new apple OS, El Capitan?  I have to replace my LaCie labeler because it is not compatible.

There is no mention of Mac compatibility on the outside of the box, I haven't opened mine yet. I ordered it as a backup for another drive should this fail, plus it can do LightScribe which one in a while comes in handy. The built date on the box reads October 2010 for whatever it's worth.

Do I need the disc that comes w the player to install the device or can I just attach it to my laptop w the usb?

Try plug and play- Wait a couple minutes to see if your system recognizes and installs it properly automatically.

Typically these are plug and play for newer Laptops. If you need drivers installed for older operating systems you can use supplied disc or look for updated drivers online.

Not at all. Compatible with all brands of PC/Laptops. You may need burning software if your PC/Laptop does not have that natively and you wish to make your own copies of CD's/DVD's.
