Is this compatible with airport?

I do not use AirPort, so I cannot answer that question.  There is reference to an Apple product called "AirPrint" on the HP support web site.  This is apparently used for connecting Apple mobile devices to a printer, so evidently it will work with these kinds of devices utilizing this software.  Of course, this printer inherently supports MAC computers.  I don't know what your specific application is.  I can tell you definitively that this printer has met my every expectation for performance, it was simple to set up and is offered on Newegg at a very reasonable cost.

Does this printer do 2 sided printing?

Yes, the printer DOES do two sided printing.  It prints one side, then the paper comes out and sits for a second or two to let the ink dry, and then it is taken back into the printer to print the other side.  Looks a little strange at first, but it works great.  It's an excellent printer!

Question 3

If one of the ink cartridges (like a color cartridge) is missing or spent, are you prevented from printing altogether, or will it still let you print in black?

When I first got the printer it was unusable because the black STARTER cartridge was defective.  I purchased a new black cartridge and the printer refused it.  When I contacted HP they gave me a way to enter the service menu to allow me to continue the setup with the new cartridge and they sent me a replacement black cartridge.  However, the printer is very loyal to HP.  No third party cartridges and if one color is missing or empty, NO printing with the remaining cartridges even if you are only using black output. There may be a fix, but I'm not aware of one.

NOTE: According to Consumer Reports this printer has a very frequent (wasteful) ink maintenance cycle.  It prints very well.  I have had some difficulty keeping it connected by Wi-Fi. It doesn't print directly to disks like my old D7560.

what is the maximum media size?

The max media size that fits in the tray with the front door shut is 8.5 x 11.  but if the front door is open it will accept 8.5 x 14 legal size paper for printing.  The scanning glass is slightly larger than 8.5 x 11.

max. footprint 18L X 15D x 9H  I need a small footprint all in one inkjet printer?

The printer will meet you requirements for a small footprint, but scanning will be a problem if there is not enough room to put paper in the document feeder or to open the scanner cover. My printer is located in an area that is 13" high, which is enough space to partially open the scanner cover and put paper on the glass.

However, I have come to regret buying this printer many times over and would buy a different brand. I use this with a Macintosh and the scanner software is garbage. It is not unusual for scanning to suddenly stop and complain that it lost communication with the computer. Sometimes restarting the scanning job works, other times the computer has to be restarted. The printer also complains frequently if you use a refilled ink cartridge.

Can this printer scan from hard copy or the computer?

The printer can scan hard copies and directly print them and/or save a file on a computer
The printer can make hard copies from a file on a computer.

Does the 7520 generate and eMail address for itself?

You setup the email address which is an @hpeprint. Com address.  When you send to that address it will print attached documents.

What is the difference between this model and the HP Photosmart 6520?

I don't believe that the Photosmart 6520 can print on both sides of the page, which the 7520 can do.  Also, the 6520 does not include a FAX function and only has 4 ink cartridges as opposed to 5 on the 7520, including "photo".  The 6520 has an automatic paper sensor, which the 7520 does not, but I don't know what that functionality means. Other minor differences in terms of print resolutions, capacities and print speed.
