Does this printer need toner or just the 4 cartridges to replace?

Only the 4 ink cartridges - Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, and Black. Replacement is simple and similar to a regular inkjet printer. We use our printer quite a lot and are still on the starter cartridges.

Does this printer print both sides at once?

Accepted Answer

If double sided printing is chosen from your computer or device, the printer will print side 2, then re-feed the same sheet and print side 1. It does not print both at the same time, but you do not have to re-feed the paper.

Does this printer need toner or just the 4 cartridges? I got an answer that said it needs cartridges. Does that mean no it doesn't need toner???

Since this is an inkjet printer, no "toner" is used in it. It does use 4 ink cartridges which supply black, cyan, magenta and yellow ink to the inkjet (printhead).

I like my 8600 a lot and am glad that I only have to replace whichever cartridge is running out of ink and not just black or all the colors in a combo-cartridge.

Hope that clears up any confusion you may have had regarding this line or inkjet printers.

Is this wireless capable?

yes. When I hired  my computer guy to help me out on some computer issues I was having he pointed out my new printer (this one) and told me he was very impressed with this model and had purchased it for the business he worked for as an IS person!

does it have a kepad for faxing or does it have to be connected to a computer?

There is a keypad that shows up digitally when you press "fax" and you put the phone number directly onto the keypad.  However, my printer is connected to a computer wirelessly.  I don't know if it requires a connection though.

Is this unit hard wire capable?

Yes it is able to use USB to directly connect to the printer or you can use Ethernet and access it from many computers over a network.

can it be used as a stand along copier?  By that I mean when I take my laptop with me can it be used as a copier while not attached to a computer?

Yes, I have the same setup in my home office. It will copy as long as hit has power. No need for laptop to make copies.

Yes, I have it with a brand new Dell desktop and it works beautifully. I also use it wirelessly with my laptop, which is 3 years old.

Yes this is a wireless printer you will probably need a router too.
Unless your laptop has a built in router.
This printer will do duplex copying but not duplex scanning.
