I want to replace my comcast cable modem with this unit.;.;.....will it work?

No, this is not a modem.  I would buy a Motorola modem and then a router like this to connect to the Motorola modem.  If you are just trying to replace the router part of the comcast unit then yes, this could do it.  Just put your comcast unit in bridged mode and attach this.  Even though I have bought this modem in the past and I have had no problems with it.  Netgear's R6100 is a better bang for the buck.  The R6100 is a little more but it will deliver faster speeds.

Is this both a modem and wifi router?

No it does not have standalone telephone modem capabilities.
It works well with my cable modem to "route via wifi and direct cat5e cable connections to other computers on the network.  It has one port to connect to the cable modem and four ports to wire directly to your computers, printers, etc that are close to the router.  Any devices that are not close enough to the router to hard wire connect via wifi.  It has excellent range and a strong signal.  The setup is easy and the web based setup screen works well.  Ive experienced very few drops.  The WPS button works very well for easy connection to devices like a bridge for extended range.  Hope that helps!

Is this Compatable with Cox Communicatons?

You will need to use a modem to connect to you cable provider. Once the modem is set up, simply connect the WAN port into the modem and it should start right up. If you have a modem and router combo from the cable provider, you'll need to turn off the DHCP in the N450. The modem will walk you through it however, you'll need to connect up to the N450 directly to perform configuration functions.

Does this unit cover a larger are?

Not really. I expected this unit to cover a much greater area than it does. I have difficulty keeping a signal less than 25 feet away down a hallway.

I am looking for a router to get a signal in my garage which is about six hundred feet from my service in my home. Would like to know if this router would solve the problem with signal?

probably only if you used a directional antenna and a short cable to connect it. the problem is that whatever device you are connecting at the garage would also have to have a directional antenna if it does not have a powerful signal itself. If you must go that far and you have to have wireless then the most powerful consumer grade router without modding it is the NETGEAR AC1750 Dual Band WiFi Gigabit Router (R6300 v2) found here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122580 A little less expensive router would be the NETGEAR WNDR3700 found here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1JX0MR1705 Whatever you use on the other end will have to have a powerful signal to get back to the netgear as well. I assume you are connecting a PC or notebook. If not then you will have to take what you can get from a phone or tablet. Yes.  It will work with any device using standard Wi-Fi connections. 
I use it mostly with Apple products, including iPod's, iPad mini, and a MacBook Pro.
