Stable and reliable for many years

Pros: It's been stable and reliable for many years for me. It takes careful setup and care but will be a good small home based wi-fi router.

Cons: Takes a lot of configuration and tweaking to get right. I've had mine for almost 6 years now with no major issues. It's not the latest greatest or any of that so don't expect it to be.

Overall Review: The biggest thing about this is that it will require rebooting at least every 3 months or so. Like many windows computers it seems to fill itself up with errors and internal tables to full to navigate well. If you make it a regular routine you'll be fine. If you have faster internet speeds like 50MB or higher don't bother. Even with a new modem capable of 686MB this still tops out about 25MB even on wired connections. Also the 5GHZ wi-fi does not cover very much territory at all so typically you'll be better served sticking with the 2.4GHZ.

I've seen all the poor reviews and I can only attest to what I have experienced with it. Yes it has it's quirks like any and all various wi-fi routers I've used at many different places. This one has served me well in my own home for those 6 years with only needing the occasional reboot. Tweak it make sure IP6 is off and wi-fi multi-media is off. If either of these is enabled your speed will slow to a crawl. Yes it has the features but the more of these you use the slower it will be. It's 7 years old now so obviously not up to the latest improvements.

I also make sure the firmware updates are all current which has helped in some ways. In my case it does not deserve the poor ratings I've seen here because it has been a workhorse overall. At various times I've had as many as 4 phones, 2 ipads along with a wired PC and printer hooked up and surfing, downloading and streaming and it's handled it all. If you have simple needs in my experience this guy works just fine.

Buy something else.

Pros: This router is nothing special. Can't think of a feature that would make this router stand out from others in this price range.

Cons: Unreliable. In the not quite three months since I bought the router (new), I've had to reboot on average once a week.

Overall Review: Initially, the router seemed to work fine. Wasn't DOA and wasn't having obvious problems. Either would have prompted an immediate return to the local store. But within a couple of weeks, the wireless connection began randomly failing. In the morning the wired internet phone would still be connected and working but the wireless phone wouldn't. Wireless signal is now failing during the day. Whenever I try to connect to the router via laptop to troubleshoot, I can't make a wireless or wired connection unless the router is first rebooted. Contacted technical support, but the recommended changes to settings have not fixed the problem.

Looking at other reviews, others seem to have had comparable symptoms.

I chose this router at the local store because I had previous experience with the brand. All of my previous networking gear was from Netgear. It worked without problems. I assumed that Netgear gear would be reliable. I will no longer make that assumption.

Some comments about the warranty. Yes, there is one. I can pay to ship the router back to Netgear. Presumably it would confirm that this one is defective and ship me a replacement. But I would be without a router for a week or more unless I pay for expedited shipping/replacement. It might be worth it for a $250 router, but not for a $62 one. And as a practical matter, I would need to buy a "temporary" replacement router now. I would then have two routers once Netgear shipped a replacement. Having now read the other reviews, I doubt I would really trust the replacement from Netgear.

In short, if you need a router pretty much every day that doesn't need frequent reboots, buy something else. There are other, better rated choices out there that won't break the bank.

TERRIBLE Customer Service Warrenty

Pros: -Works, decent modem for WIFI and ethernet connections.

Cons: -TERRIBLE Long-term ping spikes! And when your 90 day warrenty expires, you're on YOUR OWN! I get intouch by an online chat. They ask for the Serial number and deny me because Ive been a longtime customer with the subject of trying to fix their problem. If I might say, having bought a product, and now I have to pay to fix its malfunctions, I am greatly dissappointed in how they run their support service.

Overall Review: If you want a reliable service, DO NOT GO WITH NETGEAR, unless your ready to keep paying for online support.

Walmart buy

Pros: Netgear Genie, Good features, Connects to 7+ devices at a time

Cons: Supplied ethernet cable was cause of router failure resulting in a need for periodic reboots. See other thoughts.

Overall Review: I have this router combined with a Motorola Surfboard sb6121 and a speed of 30mbps Extreme. I was using the ethernet cable supplied by the router, but router would stop working and needed a reboot. So I decided to switch over to the ethernet cable supplied by the modem and so far haven't had any issues. I also elevated the router for better signal and made changes to the QoS features on routerlogin.net. I can comfortably use both bands at 300 mbps Performance mode. 4 eggs because of the ethernet cable, but for my recent expirience, it does deserve 5. Signal on the other hand may be questionable for larger homes, but that's expected with these types of routers.

Great for my needs

Pros: - Good range. I live in an upper apartment and get the 5ghz at the end of my driveway which is impressive.
- Good speeds. Can handle 2 PCs, 1 Tablet, 3 phones, 1 wireless printer, and 1 chromecast without issues.
- Easy setup. The wizard gets it up in minutes.

Cons: - Easy Share is weak and can be a pain setting up. Features are limited. I don't use it so it doesn't bother me too much.
- Generates heat. Make sure it is well ventilated.

Overall Review: As for the easy storage, I find it much better to setup a shared drive or volume. The advantage of the Easy Share is it be be accessed over the web without exposing your PC to the cloud.

I bought this at a retailer, not Newegg.

Never buying anything from Netgear again

Pros: Worked fine for 3 and a half months without any issue

Cons: extorsion! it works fine for 3 and a half months, and then it suddenly stopped working. When calling their customer service they wanted us to buy an extended warranty which was expensive. After you own this for a period of time a mandatory update is required for it to continue, they will not let you download this required update until you purchase the extended warranty. Even if you don't want a warranty, they force you to pay more money than the equipment is worth for it to function. In other words, one day you're brand new Netgear router will work perfectly, the next 'sorry you must pay more and download an update to continue'.

Very disappointed.

Didn't hold up, never worked well

Pros: Lasted less than 18 months. Had continual problems with wireless connectivity on all PC's. Ultimately woke up one Sunday morning to find wireless was dead but PC's had good wireless signal! PC's could not connect through wireless so ran Cat5 to bypass temporarily. Lan ports and DHCP in unit was still working. Working on RMA with Netgear will see how that goes and follow up. Will just use replacement for guest access.

I have come to believe all this consumer grade stuff is built on low levels of reliability.

Cons: Nothing special. Not reliable. Short range

Overall Review: This unit is dated and only has a 100m lan port. I would not recommend purchasing this.

ReadyShare Feature NOT As Advertised!

Pros: Excellent feature set and capabilities.
Excellent wired and wireless networking.
Excellent ease of setup and configuration.

Cons: Absolutely horrid NAS (USB hard drive connectivity) feature, known as "readyshare".

Simply stated: This router has trouble detecting USB attached hard drives (via the port on the router itself).

After many hours of in depth troubleshooting and consultation with the manufacturer tech support, the verdict is in; the readyshare "feature" is all but totally broken. Of the thousands of USB storage devices available, readyshare supports a list of devices you can print on the back of a business card. Check their site (supported devices) for proof. The odds of readyshare working for any given application is extremely limited at best.

I tried many product combinations in addition to insuring there were no additional factors at play (various partition sizes, various filesystems, bad power supplies, bad cabling, etc.)

WD 1TB MyBook -- Didn't work. WD 4TB Red in Vantec NST-366S3-BK - Didn't work. Sandisk 8GB and 32GB thumb drives - Did work. SG 500GB in Vantec NST-366S3-BK - Did work. Various 500GB to 2TB hard drives in a number of other USB 1.1 and 2.0 enclosures -- 2 of 12 combinations worked, both combinations involved a different drive and different enclosures.

You'll read it elsewhere on the web and I can confirm it: The manufacturer's tech support personnel know very little about the readyshare feature. In the end, I discovered that they know it doesn't work properly and, apparently, they have no idea why. Hours of technical support sessions proved fruitless in resolving this issue.

Overall Review: Why 2 eggs and not 1? I gave it an extra egg because most features work excellently. However, I have a real problem recommending any product that does not perform completely as advertised. If a feature is broken, it should be removed, and certainly not advertised as a selling point.

Shame on you, Netgear.
