Does this product work on a Mac Laptop?

It does not work automatically with a Mac Book Pro ( I plugged it into my laptop) and I didn't see a Mac driver on their web site. So I don't think thee is Mac laptop support.

I know this adapter is compatible with windows 8, but is it compatible with windows 8.1?

It is compatible, but as I found out when the adapter arrived, the drivers provided on the disc are for Windows 7 and were not compatible with Windows 8. You have to go online and download the drivers directly from NETGEAR's website.

I have a macbook pro - the wireless card internally is bad - is this an external wireless gateway to my interent provider for a mac?

you should be fine using this adapter for your macbook pro.
