Does this work for most routers?

Yes. It supports older wireless standards and should work with any brand. The possible gotchas are that is USB2 and Linksys has drivers for Windows 7 and newer only. So it won't work with super old computers.

My Laptop has an existing internal internet adapter that is not 802.11ac compliant. Can this adapter take over?

This adapter shows up on in my laptop's networks as wi-fi 2. It did this on it's own and i am able to select between wi-fi 1 (original internal adapter) or wi-fi 2 (the new plug in adapter) at will. Goodluck
