Question 1

I don't know anything about routers first of all, but a friend gave me a Dell Latitude D505 laptop. How does this work and do I need to purchase other items to make it work or does it just plug in and go....?

The router is used as a "switch" to convert a single broadband internet signal into multiple devices that all want access to the internet or possibly among the devices for file transfer.   You can plug a Cat 5 cable between the internet modem and Dell Latitude D505.

However, if you need more devices to access internet than just the Dell, the router goes between the modem and the computer device.  Unfortunately, a router is not plug and play, although there should be a setup disk to guide you through setup.   You will have to set up an encryption code if you wish to access the internet in a wireless configuration.  The setup disk should guide you through that also.

There are other settings to the router, you may want to change, in which case you have to login to the router.  See manual for how to do that.

Can this router be used as an extender/hub to a router already hooked up in a home? I curently have a better quality router but have poor connection in certain corners of the house. I can connect to it both wirelessly and wired if needed.

The routing function can be disabled easily, and you can set it up as a stand-alone wireless access point. However this cannot handle a "wireless in wireless out" range expander scenario on the supplied firmware.  Earlier versions could be hacked with a firmware set that granted this capability, but I do not know if this updated model can be fooled anymore.

Question 3

I currently am using this router and encountering problems downloading Netflix movies. I am told that the router isn't capable of handling the D/L requirements of Netflix. Is this correct and should I upgrade my router to a higher capacity unit?

I streamed Netflix on this router all the time before we switched to AT&T. Honestly, it's the only thing it would do consistently, but I think it mainly had to do with my ISP. We tried to do Time Warner but found out that we were sharing our already low 12Mbps with everyone in the building! Maybe it's a compatibility issue with the router and modem.

Is it compatible with windows 8?

I cannot conceive of any possible reason it would not be.  There is no software to install on the computer.

Though the metro Internet Explorer possibly would not work well with the web console.  This could be circumvented by using the desktop IE or if it is Windows 8 Pro by installing a different web browser.

Is it possible to create 2 networks with different passwords with this router, one home network and one guest network?

no, this is a very simple router.  If you need to create 2 separate networks, you can either purchase 2 of these or purchase a 'smart switch' for layer 2 network

UP to 150mb speed. I recently had 9 PCs connected wirelessly and simultaneously with no problems.

I'm sorry to say that I can't be of help on that question as I didn't have that issue.  As for the item itself. ... it works rather well and has about a solid 70ft signal radius.  Installation instructions could have been a little clearer but no major issues.

Is this Router compatible with the new modems that TW Cable is installing?  The name of their modem is Arris Dg1670A.  If not can you suggest one that is.  Thanks,

It should work, but I went and bought an extreme gaming modem for like what it costs to rent theirs for like 4 months, and it doesn't bottleneck data like theirs. You can also ask D-link

You can download the information from their website. search D-Link 601 go to Technical support and verify which model you have and go from there.
