I'm looking at this and the Seagate Wireless plus.  Wondering what pluses and minuses might be for each?

I looked up the Seagate Wireless Plus, It's basically a wireless storage device. so you can basically wireless stream your media from any device that picks up your wireless connection. The Western Digital n900 however is a wireless router with storage capabilities. I bought this when I moved to college and did not have a wireless router. It acts as a router that provides you with your wifi and wireless internet connection, and has the storage capabilities you can save files and media. The Seagate is only a storage device, so you would still have to have a wireless router separate from the Seagate device. Also, the quality of Seagate harddrives has gone down in the past few years, but WD still has a great reputation.

Also, since the WD is a wireless router with one USB port in the back, I used that to plug in my printer which allows wireless printing from my mobile devices. The Seagate is only for storage. If you are looking for wireless storage I would recommend buying an external harddrive and plugging it's USB into the USB port in the back of most wireless router.

my modem is also a router would this be a problem?

There should not be problem to connect this into your existing LAN. However, if you are asking will it be problem to access your storage from internet then you will need to forward traffic from the existing router's (part of your modem) to this router which is configured by default on port 1280.

Is it compatible with Windows 8.1?

It is compatible with any operating system. My Gentoo Linux boxes and my wife's Win 8.1 laptop all connect through this router. Though, getting 40mhz N speeds is another story all together. Seems to be capped at 70 mb/s over the internal network. If you transfer a lot of files between computers/devices via wifi, I would suggest trying another router. Otherwise, you're golden.
