Follow the instructions on connecting to your PC and create a new password that you will remember than enable it to conned to your home wifi which will ask you to enter home wifi password given to you by company (Verizon, cable vision) and check save box. Now that it is connected you need to disconnect it from your laptop and have your laptop search for it as you did above also you might want to give it a name that you will recognize just in case someone else has same trendnet. This should have you connected to internet try going to newegg.com

Can I take this device anywhere with my lap top and get service?

Internet service must be available when you plug the device in. The device does not provide any service. If you check into a hotel and they have wired internet service, you plug this device for your own wireless connection to this device. For example, you can connect your laptop, tablet and cell phone, etc. into this device wireless, instead of connecting a hotel's slow or weaker connection. Since you will be nearby this device, the signal will be strong and may be faster because you connect this device to wired internet.
This brand does not come with wired out connection to your device, but only in from the internet.
There are other brands which have wire-out and in. In this case, you connect internet into the device and you can also connect your device into the travel router in addition to wireless connections of all of your other devices. But, I did not use it to review their performances.
You do not need to configure anything that network gurus do. It is simple enough for average users to follow.

Question 3

Does any of you that own this know if it can be used when a hotel wired connection requires clicking through a webpage to "agree"? I suspect not, but if someone has found I way to do so, I would be interested.

Yes but only for one non-browser thing like a Chromecast.  You can clone a Chromecast or other device to use the same MAC address as this router, and then you can sign in through a laptop/iPod/whatever.  The hotel will let you use the non-browser thing because it has the same MAC address as this router (it works for me when I travel in the US).

Since it doesn't create an independent wireless network, you may need to do the "I agree" thing from each device you connect other than the cloned one.

ASUS used to make an 802.11g portable router that set up a second completely separate wireless network so the hotel only saw one device.  This Trendnet and the new ASUS don't have that feature, but they both do the job once configured as described above.  MAC Cloning is easy from the menu of most wireless devices.

Question 4

I need a device to get data from an Envoy solar panel monitor box to a Verizon Jetpack wifi internet device. Would anyone happen to know if this item or something like it is what I need?

I do own this device, and several other types of wifi repeaters and extenders.

Unfortunately you did not provide enough info or product numbers for your own devices.

However, the TEW-654 is intended to connect a cable to a router, and create a mini-wifi router.  Such as a hotel which only has a network cable.  Or, connect a wired device using a cable, and the 654 is the wireless adaptor.

A TEW-713RE range extender is a wifi to wifi router range extender.  If your device "would" work if it was close to a wifi device,  but now it is too far away, you need a range extender.

The 713RE also supports a cable so equipment that only has a cable can be connected to the 713RE, similar to the 654.

So, you either need a range extender, or, a cable and wifi extender.  The 713RE can do both, and plugs into a powered 120v socket, like a nightlight.
