is this just a wireless N, or is it compatible with b/g also as it states in the item description?

It is compatible with all three, n, g, and older b.  Some wireless b devices (very old compared with g and n devices) may not be able to connect with the some newer wireless security protocols, but if you set the wireless to an older protocol, it will work fine.  n and g can use the newest wireless security protocols and the older ones too.

Question 2

How is port forwarding with this? I recently bought a router that can't despite the function being listed and don't want to be burned by a cheaper router.

Port forwarding works perfectly and has several helpful features, including letting you select from a list of existing computer on the network to specify the IP address in question.

Can this router be used in a repeater mode to link with my existing router to extend the coverage to a larger area?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It would need to be hard wired to your existing router and the IP address needs to be changed. You must also turn off DNS so your main router will be responsible for assigning ip addresses. I also made sure all my wireless devices had static ip addresses and made the SSIDs the same in both routers for seamless transition between the two. Also same wifi passwords for both routers. Do you need a computer to setup the router? Only have an wireless devices (Ipad) with no ethernet ports.

No, you don't need a computer to set it up. But, if you want to make any changes, such as password, or any security options you will need a computer.

Question 5

Are there specific instructions for installing for a Mac included with the router?
My old Trendnet's manual never mentioned Macs, only how to set up for a PC.
Had to resort to Trendnet support for Mac information.

I don't actually own this router, as I bought it to give as a gift, but my brother who is a computer whiz recommended it as very good, and my daughter, who was the recipient, has a macbook pro so probably it does cover Macs in the literature.  She said the set-up was very simple and straightforward.

Question 6

I wish to upgrade from my megabit TEW-631BRP to this router but it appears that the port-forwarding interface has been severely restricted in all later models from what I see.
You can see this by Googleing both models and finding the router interface emulators on the Trendnet website. On the TEW631BRP it is called "Gameing" in Advanced while on the TEEW-733GR it's Port Forwarding in Access.
The ability to to keep adding entries and not being forced to use hardcoded slots is much better and it appears I would run out of slots easily on the TEW-733GR.  Is that really the current port-forwarding interface or was there newer firmware to fix this issue?

Question 7

Anyone having issues with the mac address filter? I cannot get the filter to save.

I have issues with firefox.  My solution was to use internet explorer.  Then the router saved the configuration just fine.  the mac filter took about 10 minutes to start working but it did.  That was my experience with this router.  so far running stock firmware.

Question 8

The signal strength using this router is very weak in the far bedroom (fine in all others).  I'm looking for suggestions to boost the signal strength (wireless range extenders, etc.).

You could do a few thing.

First would be checking your channel on your router and make sure its on either 1/6/or/11/ Check for other people near you using the same channel and pick on that has the least traffic. Might want to switch from 2.4 ghz network to 5gz. Might also want to install an aftermarket firmware. Called Tomato, or DD-WRT(which is the one I use).

Apart from that you could get a longer Ethernet cable and move the router to a more central location. You could get 2nd router and use it as a repeater (google will give you some handy guide how to do this). Or you could try a Parabolic antenna (like a cheap 'Cantenna') from the bed room.

If the device in the bedroom is using an internal wireless card, the cantenna idea won't work, and would only work with an external card, and usb wifi adapters. You could also buy a more expensive adapter for the device in the bedroom. But the 2nd router idea would probably be the best, after checking your channel.

My modem here is an older SpeedStream 5360 (from AT&T).   I cannot get the Lenovo tablet to talk with this Modem.      The tablet 'sees' this Router, and I do the security entries, but  I merely get 'webpage unavailable'.   BTW, this is under WPA2 (the router default).     Do I need to use WPA or WEP instead?

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. The router worked right out of the box for me. I had to get my service provider to reconfigure my external internet connection for a router instead of direct to my PC. All of our household wireless devices connected without issue after entering the router the password (factory configured) in the device during the first connection.
