This item is not needed if I already have a router right.  This is in place of?

If you DO NOT HAVE a wired connection from your DESKTOP computer to the router, then you need this card.

If your DESKTOP computer has a BUILT IN Network connector and it quit working, you can use this card or buy a cheap hard-wire network card to connect the computer to your network.

If you can connect all your DESKTOP computers with hard wire, then you DO NOT need this card.

I have a spare computer in my living room connected to my cable TV to record television programs using the Hauppauge WIN-TV-HVR-2250 Tuner Card.  Rather than run a hard wire, I chose to use this card so I could copy recorded programs to other computers in the house without having to use a pen drive.

One thing to consider - In most instances, the fastest WIRELESS connection will NOT be as fast as a hardwired connection.  Good Luck.

..does it have a short mount with it?

Yes. It is assembled with the tall mount  but the short mount is included in the box. I purchased the Rosewill RNX-A5LX-EX 5dBi to complement the installation for my Ubuntu installation. All is well.

Is this used to connect to the internet wirelessly?

It's used to make a wireless connection from a computer to a local network point such as a router. It's this router that actually makes a connection to the Internet. You couldn't use one of these to connect to the Internet directly. However, the one I bought effortlessly hooked into my router and established a connection through to the Internet. It does its job and does it well. I can't speak yet to endurance because I've owned the card less than a year.

Will this work with windows 7?

I successfully installed this on a machine that I had just upgraded to Windows 7 (clean install). I don't remember if the bundled driver worked or if I had to get it off of Rosewill's website (I'd share the link but Newegg won't let me).

If you need to, just search for "rosewill wireless adapter card g300lx driver" in Google and it's the first result.

What operating systems will this work properly with?

We have used it with Windows 7, Windows XP, and a couple of Linux distributions.  With XP we had to get a driver.  With Linux it worked immediately upon install.  With Win 7, once we installed the 100+ updates after SP1, windows installed a driver for it so we did not have to.

will this be compatible with an asus M2N68-AM plus motherboard?

Well this specific card requires a PCI slot (NOT PCI express like I thought) and according to your MOBOs specifications you have at least 2 pci slots so as long as they both aren't occupied by graphics cards or sound cards then you should be gravy

Does anybody know: would I need to use the CD to install drivers for this or would my Windows Update find updated driver for it automatically? Thank you people

Can I use this with Windows 8.1?

From what I've seen on forums and on the manufacturers website, the drivers available do not install correctly. You can purchase and try the drivers (try compatibility mode as well) and either return or have a nice techie paperweight, or spend a few extra bucks on one compatible by the manufacturer.

My experience with this product is poor signal strength in Linux and Windows. It's a low cost option, but may not be the best option for you.

What are the internet speeds? Say, could I game off of this card?

Probably depends on the game, your ISP, and likely computer setup. The system this card was installed on is primarily for business, but has been known to stream a movie or show with little to no issues.
For the price of this adapter, especially compared to others, I would say its worth giving  a shot, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

NOTE: If you do purchase this item be aware that you must download the drivers from their website, DO NOT use the drivers on the provided CD, they are NOT up-to-date.

Is it possible to use this with Ubuntu 12.x or 13.x?

I am using it with Mint Cinnamon 15 with no problems at all.  I haven't tried it with Ubuntu 12 or 13, but Mint is an Ubuntu derivative so I guess it should be no problem.
