Is this unit compatible with Win 7 and Win 8?

It is compatible with Win 7, 8 and 8.1.  You will need to download the latest driver from Rosewill to get the 5.0 GHz band to work as the latest Windows driver ONLY works on 2.4 GHz.  This is a mistake many others have made or they would not complain about the 5.0 GHz band not working.  It is not necessary to download the Raylink interface program as the standard Windows wireless interface works fine.  The USB 2.0 cable is long enough (barely) for you to position the unit away from the PC and monitor to get better signal strength and you will pick up all the routers in your neighborhood.  Since all my neighbors are using 2.4 GHz, the 5.0 GHz band gives better service.

Question 2

Estimate the furthest range?  I'm intending to use this in a camper, in a campground.  The signal I get is great with the laptop wi-fi.  A new camper moved in, and taking all the bandwidth.  So I need to extend beyond his signal.  I got a linksys ae3000 and it couldn't pick up what the laptop wi-fi could.  I just need to go 50 yard, but I really need strong gain to grab the signal.

I only attempt prox. 75-150 ft. with this type of device. To maximize gain - high gain you use the best anita array or a three anita router with at least six ft. of cording between each.  Then use a port blocking or service denying prog. that would give you that extra edge over a bandwidth hog. In fact go to simplymephisdotcom and check out your options you have with this prog. Another reason that some may get the bandwidth advantage is because they may use a system w/o any security.  You may also consider investing in an Access Point Device with at least a 2-5 foot anita linked to your router and placed about 1/2 of the way between the 50 yard distance here in question.  Your router could be one that runs at the higher 5Ghz freq.  But it's a trade off of security, because the faster your comp. process the nic wired/wireless/bluetooth... traffic the more chance someone gets to add some sort or malware/etc. I hope this helps you out! I am working on an extensive project and haven't been checking email a frequently as I would like.

Is this compatible with linux? Namely, ubuntu 14?

I have not tried the adapter on ubuntu 14 I found a thread for It in the Ubuntu forum which new egg wont let me pasted here for you  hope it helps more the adapter its self tho has been great better than some more expensive ones ive purchased

can this be mounted on a wall? it looks like you could but can't find any info not even on rosewills wesite.

There is a long oval hole along one corner of adapter that could be used with string or a screw. The hole however isn't for mounting and looks like part of the design.
