are there any ongoing license upgrades that have to be purchased?

Hi,
There are no fees or subscriptions "Required" for this product to function.  They do however offer a content filtering/website blocking subscription.  I don't use that feature, so I don't pay any additional fees, but if that's something you're interested in, then you could subscribe.

I normally use a different firewall which does virus scanning, proxy services, web filtering, VPN, etc, for the main firewall.  I just have a small managment network where I have the ILOs and DRACs plugged into and use this one so that I can setup an IPSec tunnel to access that network remotely.  Works quite well for that.

How many Mbps are in a Gigabit? Or does this filter 90% of your packets?

1000MBs in a Gigabit. The router does inspect the packets but doesn't filter them the way you may be thinking. I have found that the throughput on this router to be quite good.

our current IT dept doesnt allow VPN will this bypass that block?

Your will have to work in conjunction with your IT dept to insure this VPN will function correctly. They may need to open a port to allow this to communicate.
