Does it work for Comcast or Xfinity?

Sorry, I can't speak directly to either as I have DSL.  However, you should be able to plug your Comcast/Xfinity supplied modem into this (Asus RT-N53) router with the supplied cable and it work perfectly to relay your internet as a WiFi signal after you run through the set up on your computer.  The set up for me was pretty easy (plus there is a lot of on-line info if you need it) and the router works flawlessly!  I have been very pleased.  Good luck!

Question 2

My provider only told me to make sure that the specs include, "DOCSIS 3", in rega(rds to any router I am considering to purchase.  Can you tell if this is a DOCSIS 3" type of router?  (Astound is my current internet provider.)

I think the advice your ISP gave you is incorrect. DOCSIS 3 applies to the MODEM, not the Router, UNLESS they are both in one unit. Assuming you are using a router AND a separate  modem, the RT-N53 (or most any other router) will work fine.

Question 3

It is listed as having support for DD-WRT, but I can't find anything online about that. Can someone link me to a version that I can use with this router?

if your router has dd-wrt pre installed than use webflash image. in my case dd-wrt was pre installed. as they advertised it comes pre installed. incase not then use Webflash image for first installation factory-to-dd-wrt.bin, then after reflash again with webflash image.
