Router was fast good range till it slowly died. Poor ventilation probably

Pros: super good range, fast set up and fast boot. Love having direct 8 ports at the router rather than an external switch...but you'll see why that is bad

Cons: mine died in less than a year. first, port 6 died and i could not get a connection. There's 8 so no big deal. Then more issues; my ethernet ports were capped at 100mbps sometimes for no reason. It'll work if you unplug from computer and replug in randomly...like 1/4 times then it'll work. My unit is fully updated, tried factory reset too. It happens to multiple wired computers on the network not only one connection so it isn't the cable or the computers. Very disappointing it didn't last a year. I have ATT Fiber at 1000mbps and plugged directly to the att box I had no issues.

Other Thoughts: During the RMA process, the rep was very condescending like I would have damaged the lan port myself. I get you have to say that physical damage isn't covered, but you dont have to tell me 4 times during the RMA process. It's a stationary router, not an iphone. Also they don't pay for shipping back. So I have to pay out of pocket for the premium $400 router?! Come on, I should have got a protection plan from newegg or something else. Routers these days don't last!

Garbage

Pros: When it was working, it was fast and reliable

Cons: The upload speed dropped to 2 Mbps, and the 5ghz band stopped working, the only way to fix it was to power unit off, I had to do this 3 times a week. I got tired of it, so I bought a Linksys EA9500 and have no problems with it, upload speed went to 20 Mbps and 5ghz bands work fine. 5ghz speed went from 150 Mbps on Asus to 320mbps on Ea9500

Other Thoughts: I always had problems with the Asus routers, this my last purchase of Asus

Manufacturer Response:
Dear Marshall M,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We would like to offer our deepest apologies for the trouble you had with your ASUS product. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control, testing and inspections, as such what you've experienced is a random issue and was by no means intentional or representative of our brand. Did you try resetting the device to factory settings? Updating the firmware could also potentially rectify the issue.
For further inquiries please feel free to reach out to us at customerloyalty@asus.com and provide this link for reference. Our customer loyalty department is dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

Thank you for choosing ASUS

Terrible quality control

Pros: - great features, good 5 GHZ performance
- AIMesh feature is nice, but I ended up not needing it due to excellent range

Cons: - 2.4ghz channel died
- Terrible support
- Terrible quality control
- Terrible firmware

Other Thoughts: LIke so many others, my 2.4ghz channel died. THis is VERY common if you read REAL reviews and forums. It seems like bad hardware, not firmware as it doesn't matter what version of firmware you're using. Asus does NOT send advanced replacements if the unit has to be replaced (which most do because the 2.4ghz channel breaks and is important). so you will be left without internet for a while. Tech support is not useful and even just to escalate to a high level technician to look at your logs to verify an issue they already know exists, takes 48 hours.

Never buying an Asus router again and despite some of their reliability of older models, do NOT buy newer tri band from Ausu, unless you can afford the time and the headaches of not having internet for quite some time.

Please provide the case number for when you had contacted our technical support so that I can take a look at the interaction and offer further solutions to have it resolved. Great Router. AI Mesh with a tri-band is amazing.

Pros: Great features:
Trend Micro Integration is one of the best Parental Control implementations I have found in a router.
Three fast wireless 2.5, 5 & 5.
Works well with ASUS Bridging solutions

Cons: This is my second router. The first one I got rebooted ever 30 minutes or so. I had to return it to NewEgg. Easy enough process. The new one had the same problem. I am suspecting this is a firmware issue.

<UPDATE After 2 years> Note: I am updating this after owning the router for a few years. All Firmware issues hav been fixed and the software for the router is FANTASTIC now. Best router I ever owned.

Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed. I had the old 5300 for a while but I drooped it so I decided to replace it with this. I have another Asus router the has the same broadcom chip and the bridge connection runs at 1700. Brilliant.

But two routers with the same problem??? If I don't hear back from Asus on tech support I will be returning this.

I do not recommend buying this until it has aged.

Only reason it has 2 eggs is because I have had such luck with Asus routers in the past.

I ignored the bad reviews, don't make my same mistake

Pros: -Good features
-tri band

Cons: -Terrible build quality
-HORRIBLE ASUS support
-expensive as can be

Other Thoughts: I wanted to love it. After owning a few ASUS routers and being really happy with them I decided to ignore the bad ratings this router has.

There was an antenna broken and another broke on installation. The plastic the used around the pivot point breaks really easily. I was extremely gentle due to the things I have read. See the images for details. I thought it was no big deal until the antenna fell over and snapped the cable. Really, really poorly built.

ASUS support was rude and completely unwilling to help. I asked for a replacement antenna or product and they pretended there was no problem.

everything I needed in a router, but the build quality is suspect

Pros: tons of settings for the networking / gaming geek to geek out on

Cons: build quality, wifi antennas are weak in quaility and performance in my experience, have a look at these photos

Other Thoughts: very disappointed due to being a fan of Asus products

King of both the expensive and worst routers on the market

Pros: Prior to firmware 32799, worked flawlessly with a RT-AC5300 in AiMesh mode. Had full bars everywhere in my home For those of you not familiar, AiMesh is an Asus proprietary way to bind 2 AiMesh capable routers into one seamless network.

Cons: After the firmware updated, which is forced, the Aimesh node disappears (from the GT main router detect the RT node) and cannot be detected, even by downgrading to an earlier firmware and reinitializing the routers back to factory setting. Note both routers (the rog and the RT) were reset and cannot detect each other.

There is a rog site full of user complaints (@asus.com) about this monstrosity waste of money. The admin of the blog continuously claims to forward complaints off to developers however a patch hasn't been released in months so we the poor (pricey mistake to purchase) are stuck a nice $500 paperweight just 90 days post purchase. Go figure the warranty is out of date too. They now have a new model out, good luck to us to get satisfaction.

Other Thoughts: Just save your money, do your homework. Seems all 5300 routers have similar issues on the company forums. Perhaps the 7200 series will be less buggy. Next time, I will be an informed buyer, and won't rely on brand familiarity.

Way to go Asus, you got my money this last time!

Note: This was not purchased at Newegg.

Absolutely forced to choose 1 egg for this review, not even deserving of that.

Above all else, beware this router.
