This unit has two hardware versions v1 and v2.  What version is Newegg shipping?

I don't know what they are shipping right now, but I bought mine a few months ago and it is a V1.  However, it came with the current firmware already installed.

By the way, it works great.

Question 2

So I can hook up my ISP Modem to the WAN port and I can then connect four (4) computers to the LAN ports and they can connect to the Internet?

Yes the way this works you connect the Internet port of the TL600 to wan Port of the modem and then if the modem is strictly a modem it's in bridge mode and you enter the login information at the TL 600 if the modem is also a router I would suggest putting it in bridge mode if possible and then entering the login information to the router.

does this have a firewall?

Yes it does, but I'm not using it.   This is directly from to config. help:

Firewall - Here you can enable or disable the Router's firewall. 
•SPI Firewall - SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection ) keeps track of the state of network connections traveling across it. It distinguishes legitimate packets for different types of connections. Only packets matching a known active connection will be allowed by the firewall; others will be rejected. SPI Firewall is enabled by factory default. If you want all the computers on the LAN exposed to the external network, you can disable it.

Mine are a year old, so would not be relivant to what is currently in inventory at new egg.
For what it's worth, these units are working fine, no issues after a year.

Is it IPv6 ready?

I think it is not ipv6 ready.

FAQ 482 on the TP-Link site lists the models that support ipv6; the TL-R600VPN is not among them.

I checked my PDF manuals and "v6" did not come up in a text search. But then, "v4" did not either.

Question 6

Hi I would like to know how much signal or speed drop there would be across this device?

From client to client within your network there would be gigabit speed as long as both clients have gigabit speed adapters.  From wide area network (internet) to a client on your network with a gigabit speed adapter the download speed depends on the speed your internet service provider is providing you with up to gigabit speed.  The router will essentially utilize the speeds of the devices and services attached to it.

Question 7

Does this unit have mounting holes on the underside for wall mounting?  Most do, but the documentation doesn't mention this.

Hi Martin,
There are no mounting holes on the bottom, but there are mounting holes on the sides near front (not shown in pictures).  I think it comes with mounting brackets, but I can't remember and if they did, I didn't need them.  Works great.

Is it suitable in Europe -- 220 volts?

The TL-R600vpn comes with a 110 volt ac adaptor/60hz.
The adaptor is not suitable for Europe, but is easily replaced.
I've had no problems with these units, I have two in a home network.

Question 9

When configuring an IPSec VPN, does it allow a dynamic DNS hostname to be entered as the remote gateway, or does the interface require an IP address?

IPsec Policy Settings Help

You could simply setup IPsec Policy referring to the following instructions. 
•Policy Name - Enter the name for the IPsec Policy. 
•Local Subnet - Enter the local (LAN) subnet and mask. (eg. 192.168.0.0/24)
•Remote Subnet - Enter the Peer subnet and mask.
•Remote Gateway - Enter the Remote Gateway. It can be IP address or Domain name. 
•Exchange Mode - Here you could find two options, IKE and Manual. You are recommended to select the default mode -- IKE Negotiation Mode, and all the parameters could be negotiated automatically according to IKE. If Manually Mode is selected, you should manually setup the Encryption and SPI parameters according to the instructions.
•Security Protocol - Select the Security Protocol from the drop-down menus. Here you could find AH (Authentication Header) and ESP (Encapsulation Security Payload) protocols.
•Authentication Algorithm - Select the Authentication Algorithm for IPsec connection. You could also keep the default value "Auto".
•Encryption Algorithm - Select the Encryption Algorithm for IPsec connection. You could also keep the default value "Auto".
•Incoming SPI - It is for direction in SPI parameter setting in manual mode, and the parameter must be the same as peer Out SPI. 
•In Authentication Key - It is for direction in authentication key setting in manual mode, and the key must be the same as peer Out Authentication Key.
•Outgoing SPI - It is for direction out SPI parameter setting in manual mode, and the parameter must be the same as peer In SPI. 
•Out Authentication Key - It is for direction out authentication key setting in manual mode, and the key must be the same as peer In Authentication Key.
•PFS Group - Select the PFS property from the drop-down menus. This setting should match the remote peer.
•Lifetime - Manually enter the number of seconds for the IPsec-SA Policy Lifetime. The default value is 28800.
•Status - Enable or Disable current policy.

Question 10

I purchased this item a while ago and the unit itself physically is v1.1. I upgraded the firmware to the one with published date 8/31/2013 for hardware v1. After a reboot, the config webpage shows the hardware version has changed to v2 (?). Should I upgrade the firmware AGAIN using the 8/1/2014 firmware that's intended for hardware v2?

The best place to ask that question would be TP-Link website or contact support. You should ONLY update firmware if there is a NEED, and not just because its there. I would test your current firmware and if the router acts like it should don't update. If the router is not acting like should (i.e. dropping connections or ?? then call TP-Links support for your router. That way you can confirm updating to the newest firmware will or will not correct your problem and NOT make your life harder.
