I'm looking to use this adapter to extend my WiFi network for online gaming on my PS4 and PS3. Is this type of connection suitable/fast/reliable enough for online gaming?

I personally have my modem/router in another room next to my work computer.  I used these adapters to get internet to my personal computer.  I play mmo's, FPS, etc. all online without a hiccup.  I get same speedtest results at this computer as the one hooked to modem directly.  Love these powerline adapters

is this in place of the router or motem for internet?

no, its in addition to. You plug one unit into a wall plug in another room, then plug the 2nd unit near the internet router and then plug it into the router and now your first unit you plugged in will give internet to whatever is plugged into it. its basically a extension cord kind of through the house wiring.

can I connect a second wireless router to this to extend the range of my Comcast wireless router which is in a poor location and can't be moved?

Yes, I've done it.  Configure the 2nd router as a wireless access point - DHCP server disabled, same SSID, different channel.

are the two included units identical or is there a dedicated 'transmitter' and 'receiver'?
so is the 'addon' unit just one more of the same thing? 
so a starter kit plus an addon means x3 of the same device?

I doubt it Jerry G.  Powerline adapters typically transfer through the electrical outlets within a household or a shop.  Not from one building to the next.

There is no clear cut answer to this question, the actual performance (i.e. bandwidth) delivered by this unit will depend on a lot of things, particularly the quality and layout of your power lines, the amount of interference from other electrical appliances,  the distance between the connected outlets, etc. It will likely beat WiFi in a crowded environment (e.g. an apartment building with a lot of WiFi stations around) - it certainly did for me, but the only way to find out if its performance will be sufficient for a particular application is to try it.

I want multiple (6) locations in my home with power line network access.

You will need one from your router and one for each network device (such as a PC.)

As long as the distances aren't outrageous, six should work dandy.

How long are the ethernet cables included, and are the adapters compatible with cat6 ethernet cables?

The cables included were 6'.  As long as the cable is using a standard RJ45 and wired as a straight through configuration, I don't see why a CAT6 would be any different than a CAT5e that I'm using.  I have one hooked up with the included 6' cable near my router, then the second hooked up on the 3rd floor of a townhouse with a 15' cable to a Gigabit switch.  Throughput is solid and has been working for over a month since I set them up.

short...  I didn't measure them but I would no more than two to three feet...   I used some extra cables I already had that were longer.
