Is this 64 bit version of Windows 7 HP?  I have memory I would like to upgrade it with, and want to go over 4 GB.

It is my understanding that Windows 7 operating system in a laptop will have a maximum of 8GB of ram, 4GB per slot (2 slots), Window XP is 3Gb and Windows 8 is 16GB. I did install 8GB (2x4) of memory in my Dell E6410 running Windows 7 64 Bit, but it only had a single 2GB stick. I also installed 16GB in my Lenovo laptop running Window 8 64 bit, it only had a single 4GB stick. If your running 4GB (2x2) of ram in dual channel there might not be much bang for the buck to upgrade to 8GB (2x4 dual channel) with the increase in memory prices. If you view you system information in the control panel under system and security, it should you if you are running 64Bit.

It came with a single 2GB of ram. I did upgrade the ram with a 8 GB (2x4) from Newegg. Interesting that you asked because that is the first thing I check when I received it. I didn't even turn it on until the ram was installed. I went straight to the bios to make sure it was running 8GB in dual channel, it was.

Maximum memory for the E6410 is 8GB. Two slots, max 4 GB per slot. Easy tool I always use is Crucial's memory finder. It will tell you the maximum memory supported, and exactly what kind of memory is compatible with your system
