Pros: 1. Lots of power
2. Can turn on and off LED on keyboard
3. Graphics is good for anything you would want to through at it.
5. Not overly heavy or cumbersome
6. Separate number pad
7. Not a bunch of bloat ware on it.
Cons: Easy to hit the track pad when tying on your lap
Overall Review: This is a good computer. It has plenty of horse power for gaming or compute functions. I bought this computer for my wife. I am picky about key strike feel (especially return), and liked the way the keys felt. She is much more picky about shape and layout. It pleased both me and her.
The real key is turn turn off the backlighting on the keys during the day and turn it on in low lights. You can see the keys in either case very well then.
By the way, my loves it.
Pros: ASUS came through quite well with this laptop. I'm able to dual boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 12.04 (with some expected M$ aggravation in setting up such a system).
The keyboard has a back light but it can be turned off or dimmed via software if you so desire. So far everything has run very smoothly for me. Typing on this keyboard almost feels like a mechanical keyboard.
What's awesome is that the RAM can be upgraded to 16GB and the HD or optical drive can be replaced with an SSD so this machine could last its users quite a while.
Cons: The touchpad is pretty stiff - I would recommend using an external mouse, or if it's more your style, the touchscreen.
No VGA port, instead there is a mini displayport as well as HDMI. A simple adapter will fix this issue for those of you that need VGA.
Overall Review: This laptop has a 15.6" screen, not 17.3" as another reviewer erroneously stated. I'm very happy with my purchase.
Pros: The laptop's build is sturdy and has pretty good performance. When I bought this laptop, I was looking for a laptop with high performance, but weighs less than desktop replacements. So far, it has met my expectations.
The screen is full HD. The touchscreen feature is nice and supports multitouch.
The instant key above the top left hand corner of the keyboard is a useful feature because I can toggle it to do perform any function I want when I press it (currently have it to enable/disable touchpad).
The sound from the laptop is very nice. It also comes with a sub woofer in the box.
It has a good ventilation system, the laptop does not get hot under normal usage (not doing any graphic intense things). It only heats up when playing graphic intense games. The two fans inside blow out at the bottom and at the part where the screen is attached to the body), so the palm area never gets hot. The only part that really gets hot is the part where the screen is attached to the laptop (hinge between the keyboard and the screen).
The backlit keyboard can be adjusted to 3 levels of brightness and the color of the light is white. The light can be turned off.
Maintenance can easily be performed on the laptop. The back cover can be opened with a Torx 5 screwdriver. I was able to replace the HDD with a SSD within 5 minutes.
Very fast boot time, especially after I replaced the HDD with a SSD. The average boot time with the HDD is 12 seconds from shut down; with the SSD is the average boot time 3 seconds from shut down and 2 seconds from sleep.
Cons: The aluminum cover gets dirty easily. My fingerprints would get on the laptop every time I touch it.
All 3 USB ports are USB 3.0 ports, but don't function well with USB 3.0 devices. The port on the right side of the laptop stopped recognizing my USB 3.0 external hard disk drive after 2 months (it still works with USB 2.0 devices). The USB charger plus port disconnects every 20-30 seconds with USB 3.0 devices. It also disconnects, then reconnects a second later, every time the laptop is plugged in or unplugged (for both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices). To summarize this, only one of the USB ports work flawlessly.
The wireless range of the laptop is horrible. It fails to detect the wireless signal when the wireless strength is 2/3 on the iPhone 5S. It also doesn't support wireless 5 GHz.
The speakers fail to work at startup if the volume is turned down. To solve this, the volume has to be turned up above a certain volume. Sometimes, the computer would have no sound at all (both through speakers and headphones), but after restarting, the sound comes back on (happened to me 4 times already).
The screen will dim the brightness when displaying something dark on the screen (for example, a forum with a black background), then would brighten up when switched back to a bright screen. I heard this problem is caused by Nvidia 3D graphics drivers.
The letters on the keyboard can be rubbed / scratched off. A keyboard protector his highly recommended to prevent this.
Overall Review: I am satisfied with the performance of this laptop.
A side note about replacing the HDD with SSD: the laptop does not come with a Windows serial key, it is embedded in the BIOS. To reinstall Windows, make sure to install the version it came with (Windows 8 with UEFI in my case). Windows should install itself without asking for a key if the correct version is used. To get a clean install of Windows 8.1 without purchasing a new key, I had to do a clean install of Windows 8, then upgrade to Wingows 8.1.
Pros: Quiet and will be quieter after I get SSD
Clean looking and professional!
Screen is great!
Cons: 2mm headphone/speaker jack has feedback noise after unit is powered off or in sleep?
ASUS.. (or anyone) if you know how to fix this noise?
Pros: Touch screen is nice, I wasn't sure how i would feel about having a touch screen on a laptop. It is a nice added feature for when you are laying in bed or have it on your lap its more responsive than my Galaxy S4. The Touch screen compliments windows 8.1 well.
I threw a 500GB Samsung 840 Evo in when i got it. I also purchased a drive caddy and took out the optical drive and placed the hard drive that came with it in there. I am very pleased with the performance I installed Diablo III and it runs smooth for me.
I love the keyboard perfectly spaced keys and they have a nice feel to them. the back-lighting is nice when you are in a dark room and it can be adjusted.
The sound is nice, i believe it has 4 speakers on the front and it comes with a sub-woofer which is a nice added effect.
The touch pad is bar none the best I have ever used. It also imitates a touch screen sense by swiping in from the sides of the pad you can tab though windows 8 apps, and pull up the charm menu.
The manufacturing seems very solid. The brushed aluminum lid is nice, but with all laptops it smudges easily. Feels very well made and not cheap in the least bit.
You can open up the laptop fairly easily with a Torx 5 driver. Nothing is soldered onto the board looks like the ram, wireless chip, video card, hard drive, optical drives are very easy to remove / replace / upgrade.
Cons: Battery Life. It runs on average 2 - 4 hours depending on if you have it on EcoSave or Performance. But that's understandable since it is a laptop meant for performance.
Overall Review: Very nicely made, worth the price when comparing to similar models in the same price range. I recommend purchasing a SSD as it adds to the performance of the laptop greatly.
Be mindful when upgrading or re-installing windows. the key does not come in the box, back of the laptop or inside of the case. It is embedded into the BIOS and i had to use a third party program to retrieve it. Also it is an OEM key and you will not be able to download the retail version of windows 8 from microsoft.
Overall Review: had trouble from start, will never buy anything from asus again...
Pros: Touch screen is a nice feature.
Cons: Battery is not user serviceable. Must return entire laptop to manufacturer for battery replacement. Even an authorized service center for ASUS was unable to obtain a battery during the warranty period.
Wi-fi range is very poor. Had to add an external wi-fi adapter.
Pros: I can't really tell what is great about this laptop because I received it damaged. Got in contact with New Egg and they directed me to Asus.
Cons: After receiving the laptop back from Asus for the second time and not being fixed. I have asked Asus to replace the laptop or refund my money they said, "Can't do that". I contact New Egg and they just say contact Asus. So the laptop is on it way back to Asus for the third it. I bet, Asus will have the laptop for another three weeks and it will come back in the same condition as when I sent it the first time. Also, I sent it back in the original box the first time and Asus sent it back in a standard shipping box.
Overall Review: I will never purchase another laptop online again and never buy another Asus product. Neither company is willing to stand by the product they sell or the product they make.
