Is this laptop solid state?

It did not come with a ssd. You can tell if they are ssd by the size. A 1TB ssd would be expensive. I bought a Samsung 250GB ssd and moved the OS to that and it has been working great. Laptop is super powerful and runs my entire house entertainment with a connected NAS.

Question 2

I've heard negative things about Windows 8.0.  Is windows 10 available for free?  If so... Is it difficult to upgrade for someone who knows very little about computers?   Thank you.

You can upgrade Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 to Windows 10 for free. I can not post the link to the free Windows 10 here, but I will tell you how to find it. Go to Yahoo and search "windows 10 media tool". Choose the second link called "Windows 10" from Microsoft.

Scroll down and click the "Download Tool Now 64-Bit", because this laptop is 64bit.

It was not hard to upgrade.

I bought this laptop for my daughter and was able to upgrade it for free with the above address. Her laptop has been working good. I recommend you have a separate anti-visus program with malware detection, because Windows Defender that comes with Windows is terrible for catching malware. My daughter downloaded a Minecraft mod that had YTDownloader malware in it that was very hard to get rid of. Windows Defender didn't catch it.
