Question 1

The specs say the keyboard is not backlit, but some reviews are saying it has a backlit keyboard. Can someone verify?

The keyboard is backlit. And beautifully so, with 2 brightness settings adjusted using the "Fn" key in combination with the spacebar. I highly recommend this laptop. The keyboard is spectacular to type on and the specs in combination with the low weight make the somewhat low cost even more worth it.

Question 2

How well does this laptoop keep cool? Do the vents work well and what kind of fan is in it?

I've actually had some negative experiences with the laptop's cooling. As someone said before, the GPU keeps plenty cool, but the CPU cooling can be lacking. Even to the point where I started getting some graphics failure on anything that ran on the integrated (like the desktop, or web applications, such as Netflix). The computer is very nice, and it does perform very well in games, but a cooling pad is a must, even for general use, I've found.

Question 3

are these lap tops able to download movies and are they at a fast rate?

Yes - it can. The download speed of pretty much any modern laptop with an Ethernet or wireless Ethernet card will be limited by the speed of either the wireless internet connection (your provider service and how much you pay for the connection) or the quality of the signal from your router - this often depends on how far away you are from the router wireless signal and how many walls the signal has to go through.

It has been a very good laptop so far however the 128GB SSD is way way too small. If you are going to be downloading videos you will need a much bigger SSD. I purchased another SSD and fitted it myself - it is very easy but you need to make sure by doing so that it does not void the warranty.

Is the palm rest aluminum or plastic?

Aluminum, there is a nice aluminum rim around the edge of the base and top. Very nice material going into this laptop. I bought it a few months back and am very happy with it. Although make sure to update all drivers or you will have some issues with the speakers and sound. Also do not use the shutdown with the "fast reboot" it isn't that wonderful.

What is the refresh rate of the display?

I just checked my settings and the maximum refresh rate is 60 Hz.

Question 6

Does this thing come with 3 internal hard drive slots?  I have noticed several people saying things like "Amazing hard drive storage capabilities (2 x mSATA and 1 x HDD)"
So if I were to open it up, it would have another slot for a 3rd hard drive?
Or is that what the external SATA connection is for?

To be completely honest i haven't opened it up but the laptop is very compact. I am doubtful that the additional HDD  slot would be internal. I'm pretty sure they are referring to the external SATA slot.

Question 7

Has anyone tried changing the back panel? I'm looking for a sleek gaming laptop and the yellow back is the only turnoff I can think of.

Not tried to change it but you could cover it with colored plastic film / wrap that they use for advertising on cars. You could also try contacting xoticpc customer support as they sell this model albeit at a higher price but with a black cover plate.

Would it be a smart idea to clean install windows 7 on this laptop?

Only if you are an experienced user who is willing to take the risks. Personally I think it could be done rather easily if you know a thing or two about drivers.

On the other hand, don't be afraid to try Windows 8. There are a ton of performance upgrades and quality-of-life improvements that more than make up for the lack of a start menu.

Is it possible to install a second 8 gig stick of ram in this laptop? If so, has anyone done it yet? Thanks.

yes, 2 slots are below the keyboard see youtube for a video on taking it off, other 2 are on the bottom. your current ram stick is the one under the keyboard.

How many memory slots does this computer have? It says that the ram is one 8gb stick, I was wondering what the specs are on this stick.

It has two slots. As for the specs, I cannot fathom that. Mine came with two 4GB sticks in it.
