Great laptop 9/18/2014 11:35:34 AM

Pros: The laptop has great features being fast processor, high end graphics card, 1080P screen, 2 SSD's for fast performance and 1 TB HDD for storage. Backlit keyboard makes it easy to see in the dark. Easily adjustable volume and outputs for sound, video, and 2nd monitors. I love the overall size of the laptop since it's less than an inch thick yet contains a quad core, separate graphics card, 3 HDD's, BluRay swapable drive.

Cons: The only con I've run into is the length of the battery. But that is due to the power behind the normal settings. If you turn off the graphics card and put the laptop into low power mode you can get about 4-5 hours out of the battery. THat isn't bad considering most gaming laptops have less than that. THe fan makes noise, but pretty much any laptop is going to do that if you have a graphics card.

Good hardware, bad software 9/10/2014 9:13:56 AM

Pros: Hardware: 1080 display, BD Rom, 16GB RAM, Video, bios that can be set to either Win7 or Win8 optimizations.

I've used Gigabyte brand motherboards for about 16 years (my first build was with a GA-6BXC) and was ready to try their notebook offering.

I had looked at a number of other brands and would have had to pay twice as much for specs similar to the P35k. The manufacturer has drivers for windows 7 and 8 on their website so with a little know-how, you can load windows 7 if you'd rather not use windows 8.

Cons: Software: first logon, created a user account and signed in, got multiple dot net error dialogs, had to reboot several times before I could get to the windows 8 tiles or desktop. Ran the USB imager tool provided by Gigabyte - had to restart several times because the computer fell assleep before finishing - I'd have thought that the tool could have broadcast a not idle to the OS so it wouldn't hibernate. When I ran the restore (to verify the memory stick) had to start over twice, first because the english was poor in the instructions, it sounded like you had to pick the source disk again, rather than the target for restore to, and there was no pick another drive if there was an error selecting the drive, you had to reboot and start over. When I rebooted again, I picked one of the internal drives and it restored, occasionally saying a file wasn't found but didn't share what file wasn't found. The restore appeared to work, but with errors showing on the console while running are concerning.

Overall Review: I'd highly recommend this system to computer adept folks who want a system with good hardware and plan to wipe the drives and load the OS themselves. I wouldn't recommend this system to someone who just wants it to work out of the box.

Also there 12+ screws to take the bottom off to get at the drives if you want to park them in a safe place so you can later sell the computer when you want to upgrade again or put in an SSD in place of the 1TB spindle drive. It wasn't hard, but it was tedious. Also note that there is a jumper for the speaker connection next to the RAM bay, if you want to remove the bottom of the system, be sure to disconnect this jumper first.

Some people have commented on the build quality, the shell of the system could do with being a little more solid feeling, but over all, the system feels pretty good. The screen is super thin, but feels pretty stiff and the hinges are solid.

Excellent hardware with some build quality flaws 6/2/2014 4:25:01 PM

Pros: Very fast machine, boots nice and quick thanks to the SSD. I haven't yet really put it through its paces, but StarCraft II runs very smoothly at max settings.
Screen has minimal glare and great contrast.
Backlit keyboard great for low-light settings.
Sleek and sophisticated design, unlike many other "gaming" computers.
Power USB feature is a handy touch.
Overall its a great machine.

Cons: Mine came with a slightly warped keyboard. It doesn't sit flush and there's a small bubble on the top left. Its too bad, because the rest of the machine looks great, very sleek. I am still considering whether I want to deal with RMAing it.

I am converting from a MacBook Pro and the touchpad isn't nearly as good. Easy fix - I bought a mouse.

Overall Review: Overall, its a very solid machine for the money. I have read elsewhere that Gigabyte has some quality control issues. I have now experienced this first hand. My issue isn't hugely significant in terms of negatively impacting my usage experience, but its very unfortunate because it takes away from what otherwise is a well-designed computer.

Pros: Good features
Slim design
Lots of storage options

Cons: Lower build quality
Built in update service

Overall Review: I bought this laptop looking for a higher performance schooling/gaming computer that was also on the slim design. On those thoughts I really wanted to love this laptop, the massive storage with an optical drive and the option to expand the storage with another ssd was amazing. But from the moment I started the laptop it was kinda buggy. Every time I started windows it would act up and give me an error, so long as I canceled the error it allowed me to access my desktop. After updating all of the drivers it went away and I didn't think twice. Fast forward 2 days later and it starts up asking for another update from gigabyte's update manager. I accepted it and it started to download and start the update. Shortly after it warned me that it may shut down and restart soon, it restarted. It started up to a screen saying that a recent hardware or software update messed up windows and that I needed to insert my windows installation disk to fix the problem. Even though I consider myself very computer savvy I decided to save myself the headache and another 100 dollars and go with a different laptop from a more reliable company. Again, I wanted to love this laptop, but the built in software and so-so build quality for a 1900 dollar computer turned me away.

Decent laptop 1/14/2014 11:28:55 AM

Pros: I don't write a lot of reviews, but considering how much research I did prior to buying this laptop, I figured I should give back. I heard that this laptop was loud and hot, but I also liked the form factor. My thoughts are below:

The laptop does get a loud and hot while playing games, but not unbearably loud.

It plays games well and the screen is nice and bright. I replaced the hard drive with an SSD, which required removal of quite a few screws (be careful of ribbon cables!)

Not a lot of bloatware, but I installed Windows 7 from scratch.

Cons: Laptop does get hot, but that's to be expected

I don't really care for the keyboard (takes a little getting used to) and really don't care for the trackpad. I am spoiled from using a Macbook however. I also didn't buy the laptop to write a novel! :)

Overall Review: Thin form factor with a 765M and I7. Sweet!

Fast but flawed 11/4/2013 6:24:30 AM

Pros: Fast CPU
Fast GPU
High res screen
Very thin

Cons: First unit came damaged and warped
Doesn't seem very sturdy

Overall Review: I purchased this laptop because I wanted a fast, super thin gaming rig with high specs. I personally wanted a Razor but they are a bit too expensive. The first unit I received had the dimple on the front of the unit that looked like someone hit it with a tack hammer. The unit was warped, wouldnt turn on. I contacted NewEgg, who were very helpful, and overnighted me a replacement.

The replacement unit came and has been fine so far.

I see that Gigabyte now has an explanation that the units were damaged in shipping. If that is true, as my box wasn't damaged at all, then the structural design of the unit is flawed.

Supposedly we now get a 5 year warrant on the unit, which is good. I also bought a 1 year accidental warranty.

The unit does seem flimsy. It could use some more aluminum or magnesium in the frame. I have high hopes for the laptop but I am afraid to really move it around anyways since it seems to flimsy.

I would not recommend this laptop right now because of these issues, even though it is fast.

Pretty darn cool 10/30/2013 7:08:15 PM

Pros: This thing is a great, super fast, laptop with a beautiful screen. I can't believe how thin and light it is compared to the insane performance.

Battery really seems to last.

Back-lit keyboard really is a nice touch.

When buying a laptop in 2013, you want lots of ram, a fast processor, a bright, high resolution screen and an SSD. This has all that and more. Plus it is sexy thin.

The black, brushed aluminum looks great except for. . .

Cons: Hope you like fingerprints. I am not a sweaty or oily guy as these things go and it picks them up at every touch.

Windows 8 is WAY worse than I thought . . . and I expected bad.

Has a weird bend in the middle where the DVD drive is that makes it not sit perfect, but that is very minor.

The auto setting on the back-lit keyboard is wonky - dark room should turn it on, but it goes on and off when watching a video based on what is on the screen. Toggling it works just fine though.

Overall Review: I bought this for business because I like to have a nice, capable machine in front of customers. This doesn't scream "gamer" but is certainly more than capable of it if you so choose.
