does this laptop support an additional storage drive?

Yes. You can buy an external ssd & connect it via usb 3.0 for faster transfering. I use a GLYPH 1TB external & its perfect for storing games from steam & oculus.

Does this laptop support an additional hadrive? The 1 GB SSD is too small for what I need.

Yes. You can connect an external SSD via usb port (3 on this laptop) or usb 3.0 (2 on this laptop , 1 of them supporting a lightning fast connection.) I use a GLYPH 1TB external for games on steam & oculus, keeping the 1TB on my laptop open for files I work on. (On the go VR is a thing for this if you get the Rift S & a usb 3.0 to Display port adapter, You just need to be plugged in) If an extra TB isn't enough, I believe Segate has a 16TB External expansion tower you can put in place of where an actual pc tower would be, for about half price as a fast 2TB Samsung External ssd.
