is the keyboard backlit?

Yes, the keyboard is backlit. Just push a key and it lights up the keyboard.  It is really nice to have this on a pc, especially in low light conditions.

Question 2

Does this laptop have a VGA port? Can't tell from the pictures.

No it dies not. Has some USB ports, HDMI port and an Ethernet port. HDMI is the new best standard seeing that it's a smaller cable that also caries data and audio.

Does this laptop have a webcam?

Yes.

What accessory items come with this computer i.e. power supply, etc.?

Power supply is the only thing not attached to the computer other than some documentation and a 10 page "Intro to Windows 8" booklet.

Shop carefully. I've seen this same computer elsewhere for less or with additional accessories for the same or slightly higher price.

It is a great computer, but beware that it's a big screen and an i7, so if you need to use it for a long time on the battery, it might not be your best choice.

I only use mine on battery occasionally, but when I do, I need it for a fair amount of time. By using the power saving options and a second battery, I can get about 6 hours. If I run it on high performance, I get 3 to 4 hours using both batteries.

Please note that I moved the internal HDD to the second slot and added a Samsung EVO 500GB SSD and upgraded the RAM to 16GB, so mine does use more power than yours would out of the box.

If you're planning to upgrade it as above, check out HP's store and configure the new version with 16GB and an SSD. You  might find that's a better deal than upgrading it yourself.

I'm looking to replace the wireless card on this laptop. Are there any compatible wireless cards that I can replace it with? Thank you!

I would have no idea, but it would seem to me that the people to ask would be HP. They would be the ones to talk to about people needing to replace something in the laptop, it would seem to me.

What kind and how many USB 3, USB 2, HDMI ports are there?

Newegg has the specs posted.  But to answer, four (4) USB 3.0, two on each side, card reader, network port, hdmi port, headphone jack.  Also has an empty drive bay inside, although a $30 kit is required to add a drive.  I put in a 2TB laptop drive and moved the 1TB to the extra bay.

I find the fingerprint reader to be flakey and useless.

does it has any scratch on it?

Mine had a small dent and rubbed area on the paint.  Each one is different.   It may or may not have defects in the case.

What is the screen resolution of the display?

I found information that I think is correct for screen resolution.

Are the refurb items inspected/approved for physical damage (i.e. gashes and cracks in chassis)?

I bought 2 refurbished HP laptops. The only difference I could see between these 2 and my last HP laptop, (which I purchased new), was that they came wrapped in a plain brown box that said refurbished. There were no scratches, dents or marks of any kind.  I believe many of the refurbished products are simply returns that are being resold.

I bought 2 HP desktops that were refurbished and they had some scratches and nicks on them. The difference was that these were returned business leases that were refurbished.

The best way to tell the difference is the age of the computers. The laptops were Windows 8, with i7 processors. The desktops were Windows 7, with core 2 duo processors. The i7 processors are too new to be out of service already, whereas the core 2 duo processors are not even being made anymore.
