where is ssd placement location >?

This laptop is technically not a user serviceable product. With that said, you can open the case after removing 16 screws and using a credit card to gently pop the top and bottom chassis apart. Inside on the right side of the board you will see HDD location.

Can you load linux on this?

Yes! I added a standard 2.5" Crucial SSD to the large slot, and put in a 1TB HP M.2 PCIe NVMe solid state 'stick' drive, and use it as my main drive, with the larger drive as a backup. The M.2 drive slot is backward compatible, so you can use the slower 2280 drive is one is available, but the NVMe drive is blazing fast. Newegg is the lowest price and these drives I have found, so you don't have to look far. I hope this helps.
