Is this a brand new unopened carton or a reconditioned unit?

The Gateway  I purchased on December 28, 2013 is brand new. All packages were sealed and it still has the plastic screen protector on it. Though I am having problems with it, it is all operator as I don't know what I am doing, I am happy with it. I had purchased a used one and after 6 months the key board died on me.  Hope that you like yours.

I bought this laptop about two months ago and it has performed well until about a week ago when the screen started to occasionally fade in and out. It will fade and flicker, and occasionally black out entirely, and then come back to life or usually if I reangle the screen slightly it will fix it but sometimes just temporarily. It has not really been moved from where I keep it and there has only been regular use. Any ideas as to what might be wrong with it?

I have owned mine over a year and haven't had and problems yet . sounds like you may have a problem with the video card and or processor. Nowadays video is integrated on the same card as the motherboard . If is still under warranty I can only suggest you call the manufacturer .

What size is the laptop screen?

Side to side the screen is exactly 15 inches, and it is 8 and 1/2 inches tall. It also has great resolution and awesome color, you will enjoy looking at all your pictures and any games you play will be even better. Enjoy Dennis

"Specifications" for this laptop on Newegg's website, show the weight as 7.05 pounds. My own household scale (not pinpoint accurate for such lower weights) indicates 6 pounds for the laptop alone - i.e., without any cords.  Incidentally, I am very satisfied with my new Gateway as well as with Newegg's dependably great handling of the order!

I bought two.  One came in a red case with white keyboard.  The other was an all white model (everything was white).

It comes with a scaled down version.  You need to purchase a license to open it up.

No, laptops these days will almost always come with a video processor soldered to the motherboard (meaning you cannot replace them)

yes it does. It has a year warranty from the manufacturer and covers defects only, as any other manufacturer.  I would recommend getting the additional coverage.
