Does it come with windows 10 update when it's available?

The windows 10 update reminder is not on the desktop or screen anywhere and I cannot get it there. However by going to Microsoft it does seem like it will be available and available for download around July 29. Best I can tell

Does it have a read/write DVD drive?

No, it doesn't come with a drive installed, but the slot is there to install one if you want.  It takes a 9.5 mm SATA drive, not the thicker 12 mm drives.  The bigger issue that I've found is getting a drive with the tab on the back so it can be secured in the case by the screw that you'll have to remove to take out the place holder.  All that said, probably easier to just get an external unit.  Then you don't have to worry about getting the right faceplate to match the case (if that is a concern for you).

Does this laptop come with Windows 8.1 (32-bit) or Windows 8.1 (64-bit)?

All computers sold come with 64bit. Though if you have a real product key you can use it to install either 32 or 64 bit versions. But unfortunately on all pre-installed Windows 8 machines you do not get a product key.

Do I get a free windows 10 download with this?

Bryan, Yes, you are eligible for the free upgrade currently scheduled for release on July 29.  Any computer factory pre-installed with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 qualify.  Use the icon in the system tray to reserve your copy and download/install when released.

Does this have a dvd drive?

No originally it has not. But you can install easily a standard SATA dvd, it has a bay for it.

Does this laptop has a bay for a SSD Drive? if that so what type it is 2.5", M.2 or eSATA ?

No.  To add a SSD drive, you will have to remove and replace the std e-sata drive.  Be advised, this involves removing the keyboard and unplugging 3 or 4 micro flat cables.  This is a well built machine, but it was not designed for maintenance.  To add more memory requires lifting the motherboard out.

what are your thoughts on 8.1?  Issues? Difficult to use, etc?

Personally, I am a 7 fan and have advoided "upgrading" to 8. When I bought this computer, the first thing that I did was to install Linux Mint, although that is less because I hate 8 and more because I wanted to familiarize myself with Linux. Assuming that you will not be doing that, however, I think that you'll be fine with 8.1. If you're familiar with 7, it takes about a day before you figure out all of 8.1's idiosyncrasies and become comfortable with it. That said, although it is a usable operating system, I still feel that 7 is more streamlined and user friendly (although 8 is faster, so there's that).

Another thing to consider is the release of Windows 10 at the end of this month and the fact that 7 and 8 users can upgrade for free.  It may be that you can only upgrade freely for a year, but we'll find out at the end of this month. Yes, Windows 10 brings back the start button.

Essentially, I guess that I would say that you shouldn't let the fact that this computer runs 8.1 hold you back from buying it. Frankly, you'll be hard pressed to find one new that still runs 7, and, if you absolutely hate the OS, you can upgrade to 10 at the end of this month. That said, it might be worth waiting to see if you can just buy a computer with 10...

Windows 10 should be available for all win 8 and 7 users. If you want to skip the wait Google windows 10 media creation tool and run it to manually force the windows 10 upgrade worked on my hp stream 7.  I haven't done it on this guy yet keeping 8 for a bit to learn it more for a+ exam.

It is new. Just bought one but I highly recommend reinstalling the operating system once you get it. But, windows 10 is coming in a few days so upgrade to that.
