Is this actually a speaker ?

Yes, it is a 2 speaker stereo amplified bar. It has 2 speakers about 1.1 inch diameter in a 6 inch long bar mostly plastic with a metal screen over speakers. It puts out 2.5 watts of amplification of sound but does require BOTH an output jack (has 1/8 inch plug for sound output) and an USB socket (to power the amplifier). The sound is GOOD with a LOT of volume. It will NOT sit on top of my laptop screen as shown. I had another brand sound bar that did set on top of my laptop and was not as heavy. The other sound bar did NOT sound as good but only required an USB socket. I had wanted it to set on the laptop screen (it is poorly balanced with just a swing down plastic strip to locate position). It was a trade off as the sound is Better than what I had.
