Plex Home Theater

Pros: Small
No Fan
HDMI with Audio
Fast Storage

Cons: Don't think this has enough heat disipation

Well its 2016 August and the USB ports on this thing are dead. Will not recognize anything that I connect to them. Not even to boot up to the BIOS. piece of junk, stay away.

Other Thoughts: Installed windows 8.1 with Plex Home Theater
This thing works like champ. plays 1080p60 mts files without any issues
MKV 1080p play fine as well.
Replaced my hacked Apple TV with this guy, and really happy

Doesn't last a year! And it was barely used!!

Pros: Small

Cons: Everything

Other Thoughts: Purchased this just under a year ago and should have returned it on day 1. From the jump it had issues. It would always hang on a reboot. It had to be shutdown and then powered on. This was used as a way to remote into my mother's network and it was only used about 6 times. It now will only boot into the UEFI. SO I have a small useless paperweight. I will avoid Elitegroup in the future.

Loving it!

Pros: Been running Ubuntu and a Plex server on this for about 4 months now without a hitch, and really enjoying it. I was skeptical, but it seems to handle everything fine; the only issue is it struggles a bit processing video to stream elsewhere in the house on occasion.

Cons: Assembly of the wifi antenna was a nightmare with my big dumb sausage hands; I'm not even sure if it worked or not, as it's plugged into wired Internet with a cable. The processor is definitely a get-what-you-pay for situation.

Second Unit, DEAD

Pros: Cheap, perhaps too cheap.

Good little paperweight, but expensive for a paperweight!

Cons: Dies after first use.
Takes a while to RMA.
Have to search for a replacement.

Other Thoughts: I bought the Liva with high hopes of using it for a very basic purpose. The first unit i bought i got it and installed Windows 8.1 Pro on it, it got offered the free upgrade to Windows 10 when 8.1 was done installing, upgraded it to 10. The install went really smooth compared to what some have reported. After 10 was done installing it ran really nice, it was pretty responsive and useable for such a low power unit. I used it for a few hours and shut it off, selecting shut down from the start menu. Came back a few hours later and tapped the power button and nothing. Wouldn't turn on, checked all connections and everything was where i left it a few hours prior. Tried another power adapter but nothing helped. So i RMA'd it with NewEgg, if anything NewEgg deserves at least four eggs for a quick RMA turnaround, but this unit deserves ZERO.

The new replacement unit came today, installed Windows 8.1 Pro, again upgraded it to 10, everything went as expected, unit was running great no problems, and again i messed around with it a couple hours and shut it off. Came back to it this evening and tried turning it on, NOTHING IT WAS DEAD AGAIN.

Seriously!! Is it some kind of thermal failure? The only thing i can figure is they heat up with use, then you shut them down and they cool off and something fails, maybe a bad solder joint somewhere, maybe the CPU has a cold solder joint, not sure, but again it failed in exactly the same situation, that can't be a coincidence??

There is no other reason for it!! I also bought a Liva X while the first Liva was being RMA'd, so far the X model has been running 24/7 for about two weeks, no problems whatsoever! The X model also has a huge heatsink and all metal case, so i suspect it has much better thermal abilities then the non-x Liva with a small heatsink and plastic case. The two i had that failed did get quite warm, not hot, but reasonably well above room temp. The plastic cases were averaging around 75-80 degrees, i could imagine placed in a closed cabinet with media equipment that would only get worse. The Liva X seems to maintain room temp within about 5 degrees, thats quite good for a fanless unit.

Save your money, get a Liva X or something else, i suspect this Liva has a design or manufacturing flaw and others will die in time. Or just don't turn it off!!!!

Pros: I purchased the Liva to replace a Raspberry Pi as a headless home server, a role it's performing admirably in. It's running Xubuntu and shares all my files, runs Couchpotato, Sonarr and more and doesn't break a sweat. Read speeds on my gigabit network average around 60 mb/s - far and away faster than the Pi.

It's also running a Plex server, which it does well except for transcoding. It can't really handle a transcode, and Plex clients have to accept direct stream for things to work well.

It's fairly low power and runs 24/7 without any problems. Current uptime is 55 days - it'd be about twice that if I hadn't lost power a couple months back.

Unlike a lot of people here, I didn't find the wireless antenna difficult to install at all. That said, I don't use the wireless functionality.

Cons: Running headless in Ubuntu requires a dummy HDMI or VGA plug - otherwise it just won't boot. A relatively cheap and easy fix, but an annoying one regardless. It also wouldn't boot without a keyboard until I was able to change a setting in Ubuntu itself.

Love this little machine

Pros: Very small.
Use very little electricity.
cost nothing on the bill.
Stable.
Run Windows 8.1(64bit) and Windows 10(64bit).
No issue to playback 1080p and BlueRay (5.1) movie.
Using a 2.5 inch 1TB Toshiba regular drive on USB3.0 port without additional power supply.

Cons: 5V/3A DC Adapter is special. I tried all other 5V (2A-4A) adapter. None of them can make it stable running. 5V battery bank, the same story.
So I guess the 5V/3A DC adapter from the box might be ~6V. not 5V. because when I use iPAD 5.2V/2.1A DC adapter, it seems better than others.
Heat sink is too small, it feels hot with my hand on it. LIVA X has larger and better heat sink.
LIVA X BOX is also designed much better than LIVA.
WIFI and Bluetooth is weak. not sure it is card itself or antenna issue.

Other Thoughts: I still gave it 5 stars, because it is really unique, as running Windows 10 modern OS and device size, it is hardly to find the similar product on the market.
Especially ECS tried 5V DC driven design. the same as raspberry pi but with Intel Processor. that is something really worth more than 5 stars.

Running Ubuntu 14.04

Pros: This box is silent. Heat has not yet been an issue.
I have Ubuntu 14.04 running on it, wifi works without installing additional drivers. I also have Asterisk FreePBX running on it, and was able to get at least 8 calls in conference app without any issue. As a regular desktop or XMBC media machine, it is a good value for the money as well. It boots in about 10 seconds, due to speed of flash storage.

Cons: For the non-technical buyer, it could be a challenge to install. You need to make a bootable USB stick from the Ubuntu ISO..and also go into the Bios and set the install OS option to Windows 7.. this stumped me for a couple hours as to why my installation couldn't see the eMMC storage.

Also, the 32GB internal storage is not going to be enough for many people including myself, so you'll have to add USB external storage if needed.

Other Thoughts: Could work well for a call center, as it uses low power, has very little heat, and makes no sound.
