This is an EXCELLENT GPS unit!  It will come with pre-loaded maps, and in answer to your question, here's what I found on Page #49 of the 1490T on-line Owners Manual, Rev F, ( @ the GARMIN website ):
"To receive ONE free map update (if available), register your nuvi at garmin within 60 days of acquiring satellites and driving with your nuvi.  You are not eligible for the free map update if you register by phone or wait longer than 60 days after the first time you drive with your nuvi."
