Do I need to remove batteries to turn off controller?  Does it just sit idle and turn itself off with good battery life?

In Wireless mode, the controller will turn itself off if it goes long enough without activity.  I believe if it's connected by USB, it will remain on as long as power is supplied.  Battery life seems to be quite good, though too be honest I tend to use mine with a USB cable, and use rechargeable batteries in everything.

Can you put any rechargeable double AA batteries directly into this controller without problems?

Yes. Any AA sized batteries will do the trick. They're not quite as convenient as the rechargeable batteries packs, but if you have 4 of them (like I do) then you should be able to keep the other two on the charger so they're ready to go when the ones in the controller run out of juice.

I am currently using it for Windows 7 x64. It works almost perfectly. (By almost, I mean that the stick itself is fine, but the driver software can be a bit counter-intuitive to use, and I found that it needs the occasional thump to get your settings to surface. Or the dead-zones, anyway.)

Is this version controller the redesigned version that has the 3.5mm jack built in at the bottom and the improved bumper buttons? The new version of the Xbox One controller with these improvements has been shipping for several months now so I'm not going to buy this if this is the old version of the controller. Thanks!
